May Day marked worldwide

Thousands of Cubans on Tuesday marched in a ceremony co-chaired by Party leader Raul Castro and President Miguel Diaz-Canel in Revolution Square, in Havana, to celebrate International Workers’ Day (May 1). The event was organized by the Cuban Worker’s Federation (CTC).

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro chaired a grand meeting in Caracas, calling on citizens to continue the Bolivar Revolution initiated by late President Hugo Chavez. Mr. Maduro reaffirmed commitments to reclaim workers’ basic rights, pursue social projects serving the majority, and fight hostile forces’ schemes against Venezuela’s revolution. Thousands of Argentineans people gathered in Bueno Aires to protest price increases for public services. A major protest was held in Brazil to support detained labor leader and former president Lula da Silva.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hunsen attended a lunch and promised 12.5 USD each to thousands of workers in the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone.

Ly Son Island commemorates sailors of Hoang Sa flotilla

A feast and commemoration ceremony for Hoang Sa’s soldiers was held on Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai province, on Tuesday, to honor their achievements in mapping Vietnam’s islands and defending Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos.

The annual ritual has been observed for centuries by families on Ly Son Island. It is followed by a traditional boat race.

Nguyen Thanh Phuong, a resident in An Vinh village, said: The ceremony is held every year on the 16th day of the third lunar month to commemorate those who has sacrificed their lives to protect the archipelago. The event also serves to remind younger generations of their predecessors who came to Hoang Sa 400 years ago to essert national sovereignty over Vietnam’s seas and islands.

15,000 workers receive free medical examinations

Approximately 15,000 workers from 10 provinces’ main industrial zones will receive free medical exams from the Ministry of Health.

This program, part of the Action Month for Labour Safety, will begin in Ho Chi Minh City this Friday and continue in Hanoi, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, and Hai Phong. Doctor Nguyen Dinh Trung of the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health, said: This year’s Action Month for Labour Safety aims to reduce occupational diseases and work-related accidents. Activities this month will promote labour safety to local businesses.

Another FM radio station built by the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) with the use of non-refundable aid from the Vietnamese Government was inaugurated and put into operation in Pray Veng Province, Cambodia on Tuesday.

Present at the inauguration ceremony were Charge d’affaires at the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia Nguyen Trac Toan, Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith and other Cambodian officials and people. The station will be an important media channel helping local people update information and enrich their cultural and spiritual lives. VOV has so far built 19 radio stations and two TV stations for different Cambodian provinces and cities and will build three more TV stations this year.

Tourist destinations attract crowds of visitors on holidays

Tourist destinations nationwide attracted a great number of visitors on National Reunification Day and May Day.

The Can Tho Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department reported that Can Tho received nearly 120,000 visitors and earned almost 1.6 million USD in revenue, up 19% from last year. Popular destinations in the city are the Ninh Kieu Pedestrian Bridge, the Ninh Kieu Pier, shopping area and night market, the Cai Rang Floating Market, the My Khanh Ecotourism Village, and the Phuong Nam Truc Lam Zen Monastery.

During the holiday week that began from last Wednesday, Phu Yen welcomed 34,000 tourists, up 30%. Holiday travelers mainly came from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and several northern provinces. They were impressed by the beautiful local scenery, the low prices, and the abundant entertainment of the Phu Yen Culture and Tourism Week 2018.

According to Lao Cai authorities, Sa Pa received 68,000 visitors, and local hotels reached 95% of capacity.

During the 4-day holiday, the number of visitors to Hanoi reached 320,000 people, 66,000 of them foreigners. The Vietnam Administration of Tourism reported that Hanoi earned almost 40 million USD from its hospitality sector. Popular destinations in Hanoi include the Temple of Literature, the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Ngoc Son Temple, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and Ba Vi National Park.
