Party leader: Vietnam’s anti-corruption efforts lauded

Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong meets voters in Ba Dinh district, Hanoi on Sunday.

In his address, the Party leader lauded the voters’ opinions and contributions to the Party building and national development. He said voters’ opinions concerning cyber security, Law on Education, Law on Planning, anti-corruption, and prevention of wastefulness will be discussed at the National Assembly’s upcoming meeting. He stressed the important role of the National Assembly and People’s Council in the fight against corruption. The Party leader said Vietnam’s anti-corruption efforts have been lauded by the Vietnamese and foreign community. Mr. Trong said the Party resolutions on streamlining the State apparatus and salary reform are part of the efforts to prevent corruption.

The same day, the Party leader met with voters in Tay Ho district, Hanoi.

North Korea invites journalists to nuclear test site closure

North Korea will invite journalists from South Korea, China, Russia, the US, and the UK to a ceremony marking the shutdown of its Pyunggye-ri nuclear test ground, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Saturday.

North Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement that due to limited space, only those journalists are invited to the ceremony scheduled to take place between May 23-25 depending on weather condition. The ministry said North Korea will provide special flights for correspondents from Beijing to Wonsan city, and then they will take a special train to Pyunggye-ri.

The statement said North Korea will set up a press center and arrange special accommodation for the reporters. It added that Pyongyang will promote contact and close dialogue with the international community to ensure peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and in the world.

IS claims responsibility for Paris knife attack

An assailant shouting Allahu akbar (God is greatest) killed a passer-by in a knife attack and wounded 4 others in Paris on Saturday before he was shot dead by police, French authorities reported.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

The assailant was born in 1997 in the Chechnya region of Russia, a judicial source said on Sunday. The parents of the attacker are being held for questioning by police, the source added.

The attack took place in the heart of the French capital, in a district popular with tourists for its many restaurants and cafes, landmark retail stores, and the Paris opera.

2018 Red flamboyant flower festival opens

The 2018 Hai Phong-Red flamboyant flower festival opened on Saturday as part of activities to celebrate Hai Phong’s 63rd Liberation Day.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the event which is themed Hai Phong reaching out to the sea. The festival is an opportunity for the city to promote its image, potential and attraction. In his address, Chairman of Hai Phong’s People Committee Nguyen Van Tung highlighted the port city’s rapid development with a modern infrastructure system. The city has become an attractive tourism and investment destination while local people’s living conditions have improved remarkably.

Japan hopes to arrange Abe-Trump talks before US-North Korea summit

The Japanese government is making arrangements for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to meet US President Donald Trump ahead of a landmark US-North Korea summit in Singapore on June 12, government sources said Friday.

As leaders from the Group of Seven industrialized nations are expected to gather in Canada on June 8 and 9, Abe hopes to hold talks with Trump on the fringes of the summit and coordinate efforts toward resolving issues related to Pyongyang. Abe is expected to ask Trump to push North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to address the long-standing issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s.

Russia, Turkey, Iran to discuss Syria peace in Kazakhstan

All parties, including the guarantor states: Russia, Turkey, and Iran and the Syrian government and armed opposition, to the Astana process on Syria have confirmed their participation in the upcoming negotiations.

The negotiation will be held in the capital of Kazakhstan on Monday and Tuesday, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry reported on Saturday. he ministry said the UN delegation will be led by Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and the Jordan delegation will take part in the meeting as observers. It added that the parties will hold bilateral and trilateral expert consultations and the plenary meeting will be held on Tuesday.
