Hitachi Named a Visionary in Inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant for Industrial IoT Platforms

Hitachi Positioned in Visionaries Quadrant for Completeness of Vision and Ability To Execute

TOKYO and SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501) and Hitachi Vantara, today announced that Hitachi has been positioned in the Visionaries quadrant of the inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant for Industrial IoT Platforms1 based on Gartner, Inc.’s evaluation of the company, which included Hitachi’s Lumada IoT platform.

Gartner describes the market for IIoT platforms as “a set of integrated software capabilities. These capabilities span efforts to improve asset management decision-making, as well as operational visibility and control for plants, depots, infrastructure and equipment within asset-intensive industries.” In the report, Gartner predicts: “By 2020, on-premises Internet of Things (IoT) platforms coupled with edge computing will account for up to 60% of industrial IoT (IIoT) analytics, up from less than 10% today.”

The report also notes: “Gartner believes that 2018 will see a significant expansion of IoT platforms for industrial enterprises as both cloud and on-premises deployments.”

Lumada is a highly flexible, intelligent and composable software platform, which offers a portable architecture that enables it to run on-premises, in the cloud and in hybrid environments, and support industrial IoT deployments both at the edge and in the core. Lumada combines artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and asset avatars – commonly known as digital twins – to streamline and simplify management of connected business and industrial assets. This helps to increase asset utilization and accelerate the time to value of IIoT initiatives, driving faster time to insight and business outcomes for industrial and enterprise customers. Outcomes include increased operational efficiencies and cost savings; enhanced operational safety and reliability; improved asset utilization, performance management and product quality; and the creation of new business models.

Customers looking to further accelerate the time to value of their IIoT initiatives with Lumada will also benefit from co-creation services engagements with Hitachi, which taps them into Hitachi’s expansive industrial, operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) expertise to create customized IoT solutions tailored to their unique requirements.

“Hitachi is honored to be identified as a Visionary in this still nascent but rapidly emerging IIoT market. From our perspective, organizations are now implementing IoT initiatives globally to gain insight into their operational assets and processes, increase efficiencies, improve customer experiences and gain a competitive edge. Industrial verticals in particular stand to gain enormous benefits from digital solutions and we believe Hitachi is well positioned to help them achieve their goals,” said Brad Surak, chief product and strategy officer at Hitachi Vantara. “Lumada unites the best of Hitachi’s intellectual property, innovation and IT/OT expertise and has been tested and refined in co-creation engagements with Hitachi’s customers around the world. We will continue innovating with Lumada to develop data-driven solutions that propel our customers’ businesses forward.”

Fujitsu Deploys Juniper Networks’ AppFormix for Cloud Operations Management and Optimization

AppFormix features such as real-time intelligent monitoring and the easy visualization of data, were crucial for the increased requirements of the new region of Fujitsu’s K5 cloud platform

TOKYO, May 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Juniper Networks (NYSE:JNPR), an industry leader in automated, scalable and secure networks, today announced that Fujitsu Limited has deployed Juniper’s cloud management platform AppFormix in Japan, as a key part of ensuring the operational efficiency of the new region of its widely adopted enterprise cloud platform Cloud Service K5.

Open, agile and legacy-compatible, Fujitsu’s K5 is the world’s largest open-source based platform and has seen strong adoption globally by organizations looking to drive digital business transformation, across the public, private and hybrid cloud.

However, the open-source software used previously for the management of the K5 platform did not provide Fujitsu with the automated real-time management and data visualization features it needed, which resulted in manual processes and increased OPEX.

As Fujitsu prepared for the launch of the new region of K5 which scales several times the previous version, they required a cloud operations management solution that could address these operational requirements, while also bringing significantly increased capabilities.

To combat these ongoing challenges, Juniper was selected to carefully develop and deploy AppFormix for Fujitsu’s K5 platform to address these growing operational needs, offering simplified cloud operations management and performance optimization capabilities through big data analysis and machine learning.

In addition to significantly reducing operational burden and complexity, AppFormix’s unique user-friendly GUI dashboard displaying real-time reporting and high level compatibility with OpenStack has also allowed Fujitsu to better plan resource consumption and capacity expansion, which is crucial in light of potential continued service expansions of the K5 platform in the future.

Supporting Quotes

“AppFormix is a crucial component of our K5 platform, especially for the understanding of real-time cloud usage status through its intelligent dashboards and  seamless integration with billing systems. We are excited to further develop our partnership with Juniper Networks, as we anticipate greater scope of applications for AppFormix going forward, particularly for advanced operations utilizing AI.”

– Masahiro Ohta, SVP and Head of Cloud Service Business Unit, Fujitsu Limited

“AppFormix is delighted to be an integral part of Fujitsu’s K5 Cloud Service platform, an exciting partnership in our challenge against complexity. We look forward to the continued advancement of AppFormix solutions in support of Fujitsu’s operational needs going forward, especially for the potential global deployment of K5 as a continuation of our long-term, firm partnership.”

– Sumeet Singh, Vice President of Engineering at Juniper Networks

Australia protests China’s militarization in East Sea

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Monday raised objections to China’s militarisation of the East Sea on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina.

Some Chinese bombers including the nuclear strike-capable H-6K recently carried out take-off and landing training on Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) islands. While meeting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Bishop said Australia’s position has been very clear and consistent and Australia’s concern about militarisation of disputed features of the East Sea has been the subject of a number of discussions, and was again discussed at the G20 summit.

Bishop also held talks on the East Sea with the US at the summit. She said Australia will continue exercise the rights of freedom of navigation and overflights in the East Sea and support other countries’ rights to do so and reiterated this stance with China.
