Cuban president: US-Cuba relations in decline

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said relations between Cuba and the United States are worsening under President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Telesur network on Monday, he criticized the US economic blockade on Cuba, terming it “the main obstacle to the development of Cuba.” President Miguel said Havana still maintains an open channel of dialogue but it must be between equals.

He also confirmed that Cuba was not involved in any alleged attacks against diplomats at the US Embassy in Havana.

Southeast Asian cyber-security center opens in Thailand

A cyber-security center opened in Thailand on Friday to train personnel from countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to help combat cyber threats in the attack-prone region.

The idea of the ASEAN-Japan Cyber Security Capacity Building Centre came from a meeting between ASEAN and Japan’s ministers in Cambodia last year. About 700 cyber-security personnel from Southeast Asia are expected to graduate from the Japan-designed programs, which include cyber defense, digital forensics and malware analysis.

Vietnam Airlines to resume flights to Osaka

Vietnam Airlines will resume the HCM city to Osaka route next Tuesday (September 18) but with just one flight a day because of the limited operations of Kansai airport.

The air link between Vietnam and Osaka was disrupted early this month by storm Jebi. The Hanoi-Osaka route is also expected to be restored, with one flight a day, starting next Thursday (September 20). Starting next Tuesday, Vietnam Airlines will operate a wide-body Boeing 787 for the Hanoi-Nagoya route instead of an Airbus A321. The Boeing 787 will also likely be used for the HCM city-Nagoya route starting next Friday. Vietnam Airlines has had to cancel 56 flights between Vietnam and Osaka from September 4 to 17 as a result of storm Jebi.

Vietnam Airlines adds hotel booking services on website

Vietnam Airlines has announced they will provide a hotel booking function on their website beginning this week.

Customers can buy airline tickets or book a hotel room or both on the website www.vietnamairlines.com.

Customers can book a room at hotels around the world. They can search for hotels based on location, customer ratings, services, or comments on the Tripadvisor website. Prices will be updated directly by the hotels.

Booking a hotel on their website is part of a service called VNA Holidays. Vietnam Airlines launched VNA Holidays in December, 2014, but until now only allowed customers to book a hotel when they also bought a flight ticket. Vietnam Airlines will soon offer additional services like car rentals and golf reservations.

PM shares new vision for Mekong region

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the 4th Industrial Revolution has created huge opportunities to enhance integration in the Mekong Region, highlighting the importance of soft and digital connections to economic connectivity.

He made that statement at a discussion of a new vision for the Mekong Region held on Wednesday within the framework of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN (WEF ASEAN) 2018. PM Phuc stressed the need to use water resources effectively, and connect energy, transport and human resources training, adding that the region has the potential of connecting its digital infrastructure to 250 million customers.

At the minister-level meetings at WEF ASEAN, Mr. Phuc proposed to expand the cooperative model of mobile networking with uniform prices between Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Greater Mekong Sub-region, and ASEAN. He said he hopes the 4th Industrial Revolution will lead to fast, effective development for all nations in the region.

The discussion was attended by Cambodian PM Hun Sen, Lao PM Thongloun Sisoulith, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and Thai Deputy PM Prajin Juntong.

US marks 17th anniversary of September attack

Ceremonies were held across the US to mark the 17th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3 thousand people.

US President Donald Trump and his wife attended a memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the heroes brought down United Airlines Flight 93 into an unpopulated field rather than the US capital.

A ceremony was held in the World Trade Center to commemorate victims of the incident. Thousands of people gathered in the Twin Towers to hear the victims’ names being honored.

The New York Stock Exchange had a moment of silence at 9:20. The municipal Fire Department held a ceremony to honor 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the incident.

Russia urges UN Security Council to hold meeting on Syria

The Russian mission to the UN asked the UN Security Council on Monday to hold an open meeting to discuss the outcomes of the Russia-Iran-Turkey summit on Syria.

The request follows hightened attention to the situation in Syria’s Idlib province.

On Monday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said aerial and ground attacks should be stopped and a ceasefire should be set up.
