Foreign arrivals to Vietnam increase sharply

Vietnam has welcomed 8.4 million foreign tourists so far this year, a year-on-year increase of 30%.

More than 1.2 million foreign tourists visited the country in August, up 18%. This is the 6th time Vietnam has received more than 1 million foreign arrivals a month. Vietnam now ranks 10th in the UN World Tourism Organization’s list of most favorite emerging destinations.

Emmanuel Macron’s popularity slumps

French President Emmanuel Macron’s popularity rating slumped a further 14 points in August to hit 40 percent, following a sharp 10-point drop in the previous month, according to an Ifop poll released on Sunday.

Macron has seen his popularity plunge 22 points since the first Ifop poll published three months ago, when he enjoyed a rating of 62 percent just after his May 7 election win. 4 percent of respondents said they were “very satisfied” with Macron, down 3 points, and 36 percent were “somewhat satisfied”, a fall of 11 points.

Iraqi forces win big in Tal Afar

Iraqi forces have driven the Islamic State from central Tal Afar and its historic citadel.

The advancement, just days into an assault on the strategic town, comes after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the jihadists in Mosul, where ISIS declared its caliphate in 2014.

Operation Commander General Abdulamir Yarallah said in a statement on Saturday that units of the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) has seized Citadel and Basatin districts and three other districts in Tal Afar and Al-Talia.

7 more gold medals keep Vietnam at 2nd place at SEA Games 29

Vietnamese athletes performed excellently on the seventh competition day of the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia with seven gold medals in track and field, taekwondo swimming and table tennis.

As of Saturday, Vietnam maintained its second position on the Games’ medal tally with 51 gold medals.

Host Malaysia still led the tournament with 83 golds, followed by Singapore with 46 golds.

Vietnam sent more than 470 athletes to Southeast Asia’s biggest sporting event from August 19-30.

Syrian forces gain control of 2,000 sq km of desert areas

Syrian forces and allied fighters gained control over the areas between the city of Al Sukhnah and Al Shear in the remote eastern countryside of Homs Province in central Syria on Saturday.

It is the latest progress in a string of operations the Syrian army and allied fighters have launched in the Syrian desert. According to the Syrian Observatory For Human Rights, military forces are surrounding another neighboring area near Hama, the last area left controlled by ISIS.

On Thursday, the Syrian army laid full siege on ISIS in the desert after having liberated Al-Sukhnah city in northwestern Homs province.
