Leaders’ congratulatory messages on Moldovan Independence Day

President Tran Dai Quang sent a message of congratulation to Moldovan President Igor Dodon on the 26th Independence Day of Moldova on August 27.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc extended his congratulation to Prime Minister Pavel Filip. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh sent a congratulatory message to Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Galbur.

US-funded facility improves training for Vietnam’s peacekeeping forces

The US government on Monday handed over to Vietnam a training facility and equipment for peacekeeping forces.

The facility named S5 consists of 15 training rooms, able to accommodate 600 learners at the same time, and a 254-seat conference hall.

The equipment package will be used for training in setting up a level-two field hospital by the Vietnamese peacekeeping force, which is scheduled to run in South Sudan, replacing the UK’s facility in the second quarter next year.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius expressed his belief that Vietnam will succeed in international peacekeeping activities, adding that the nation has joined hands with the international community in addressing global issues.

2nd L’Espace French Cultural Center to open in Hanoi

The French cultural center L’Espace will open its second site in Hanoi.

The information was announced at the 5th Congress of the Vietnam-France Friendship Association of Hanoi on Sunday. The new L’Espace will be located in Ha Dong district to help link the two countries while promoting French culture and language.

Scholarships provided to children of Agent Orange/dioxin victims

Children of war invalids and victims of Agent Orange/dioxin were presented with scholarships at a ceremony in Hanoi Sunday night.

Lt. Gen. Nguyen Dinh Chien, Director of the Institute Agent Orange/dioxin Study, the organizer of the charity program, praised the children for their effort to overcome difficulties and achieve good academic results: We hope that with the support of organizations, individuals, and the community, this program will become a meaningful annual event, which will provide a wealth of inspiration for children of war invalids and victims of Agent Orange/dioxin. This will open a new journey of sharing difficulties and promote passion for study to nurture young citizens of the nation.”

Vietnamese painting auctioned for more than 100,000 USD

A lacquer painting called Playing cats by Nguyen Sang was sold for 101,000 USD at the sixth session of Chon’s Auction House in Hanoi on Sunday.

This is the first painting by a Vietnamese artist to sell at auction for 6 figures. Nguyen Sang is one of the famous quartet of Vietnamese artists, Duong Bich Lien, Nguyen Tu Khiem, Nguyen Sang and Bui Xuan Phai.

Vietnam wins Asia-Pacific robot contest 2017

The Lac Hong University team defeated their Malaysia rivals on Sunday to win the 2017 Asia-Pacific robot contest (Robocon).

The Vietnamese team were crowned champions with an outright victory. Japan and Thailand tied for third place. Vietnam has won Robocon six times since the contest was first held in 2002. Robocon 2017 drew 16 teams from 15 countries and territories across the Asia-Pacific region and was hosted by Japanese broadcaster NHK. Vietnam’s national TV broadcaster VTV will host the contest in 2018.

US sticks to peace measures on Korean Peninsula

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared Sunday that North Korea’s latest missile test was a “provocative act” act against the United States and its allies but said that he still hopes to persuade Pyongyang to come to the negotiating table.

The US will work with China to see if it can begin a dialogue with Pyongyang, he said. North Korea on Saturday fired 3 missiles into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
