Constellation Brands to Report Third Quarter Fiscal 2018 Financial Results; Host Conference Call January 5, 2018

President chairs Council for National Defense and Security’s 2nd session

President Tran Dai Quang chaired the 2nd session of the Council for National Defense and Security in Hanoi on Friday.

The Council reviewed reports from the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security, and other relevant agencies on their performance in 2017 and tasks for next year.

The President praised the military and police forces for providing consultations to the Party, State, and government, their capability for combat readiness, and for training programs. He stressed the need to raise awareness of military and security tasks for new situations, hold simulation drills, and strengthen cooperation among forces to mobilize the overall strength of the entire political system and people in fulfilling defense tasks.

Palestinians clash with Israeli army in Jerusalem

17 people were wounded in clashes with Israeli soldiers on Thursday in Jerusalem and the West Bank as Palestinians protested against the US’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Thousands of protestors in Hebron and Al-Bireh city, the West Bank, threw rocks and bottles at Israeli soldiers. The Israeli army’s spokesperson said its soldiers used anti-violence tools to disperse the crowd. One injured protester in Gaza is in critical condition.

The Hamas Islamic Movement has launched a people’s rebellion following the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said Washington has picked no side in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Positive business prospects forecast for next year

The business trend will be positive next year due to growing confidence in the business climate, according to a business forum in Hanoi.

Researchers, economists, and representatives of 300 enterprises on Thursday attended the Vietnam Business Forum 2018 titled Adapting to the Changing Economy, held by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Despite the upbeat mood, participants warned of some challenges ahead. Nguyen Manh Quan, Director of the Institute of Business Study and Development, said: Vietnamese enterprises are facing difficulties, particularly in approaching the global economy. Enterprises have failed to make full use of incentive programs offered by the government.

The participants urged businesses to improve technology, governance, and quality to survive global competition.

Deputy PM lauds USAID’s contributions to Vietnam

Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue has applauded the contributions made by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to Vietnam’s socio-economic development as well as national management.

At a reception for Michael Greene, USAID Director, in Hanoi on Thursday, the Deputy PM highlighted the agency’s humanitarian aid to Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin victims and dioxin remediation in Vietnam, along with its projects on HIV/AIDS prevention, climate change response and settlement of natural disaster and post-war consequences. Greene said USAID has cooperated with Vietnam for many years, through projects that provide technical support in national management and economic development. He added that the agency is planning two projects that will use more than 50 million USD in non-refundable aid � one to facilitate trade and one to help small and medium-sized enterprises to participate in the global supply chain.

Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative helps improve business climate

28 policy dialogues were held between Vietnamese and Japanese agencies involved in the sixth phase of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative, over the past year.

The results were announced at a meeting of the Joint Committee of the Vietnam-Japan Initiative held in Hanoi on Thursday to review implementation of the sixth phase. According to the Committee, 19 out of 32 items to be done in the period have been completed as scheduled. The 19 items cover services, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, logistics, transportation, and labor. Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said: We will continue to work together on plans for the next phase, focusing on Vietnam’s technology development, encouraging private sector investment in infrastructure, and publicizing the Vietnam-Japan agreement.

The Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative is improving Vietnam’s business environment, encouraging Japanese investment in Vietnam, and fostering the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

North Korea wants direct talks with US

North Korea wants to negotiate directly with the US on security assurances for Pyongyang, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.

Lavrov said he conveyed the message to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on the sidelines of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) meeting in Austria. Russia supports such negotiations, Lavrov added.

US State Department spokesperson Katina Adams said that Washington is pursuing a peaceful diplomatic solution for the North Korea issue.
