Australia, Vietnam work on fighting illegal fishing

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority and Quang Ngai province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development held a workshop on Friday to share information on illegal fishing.

The Australian side updated Australia’s regulations on fisheries management and exploitation, punishment and fines to any acts related to illegal fishing. Brendan Rayner, Head of the International Compliance Operations section of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, said the Australian and Vietnamese governments have fostered cooperation to prevent Vietnamese farmers from illegal fishing. The Ministries of Agriculture of Vietnam and Australia signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in fighting illegal fishing and implementing communication campaign on international fishing laws and the consequences of illegal fishing.

Pham Ngoc Tuan, deputy head of the Aquatic Resources Exploitation and Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the Vietnamese government has taken a number of measures to deter illegal fishing: Under the Vietnamese law, the fine for illegal fishing reaches 1 billion VND for an individual and to 2 billion VND for a violating organization. Any fishing vessel without regulated equipment is considered illegal.

Vietnam wins international IT contest

The UNSIGNED team of the University of Engineering and Technology of Vietnam National University, Hanoi has become the champion at the 26th Vietnamese Information Technology (IT) Olympiad and the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) for the Asian region opened in HCM City on Wednesday.

After the regional contest, the winning team will take part in the international competition at Beijing University in May next year.

The ICPC is a multitier, team-based competition for outstanding students in computing that promotes creativity, teamwork and innovation in building new software programs and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure.

Embassy promotes Vietnamese culture in US

Vietnamese Embassy in the US has showcased handicraft products and publications about Vietnam’s beautiful landscape and culture at a diplomatic event in Washington DC.

The Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership was also in the spotlight. The 6th Winternational Embassy Showcase event saw the participation of 39 diplomatic representative agencies, 5,000 visitors, and reporters.

Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh told reporters that this significant cultural event creates favorable conditions for each embassy to promote their country and cherishes friendship between nations.

Vietnam seeks to boost seafood export to Australia

President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Tran Thanh Man said Vietnam will hold dialogues to boost the export of products from Vietnam’s 100 seafood producers to Australia.

At a reception in Sydney this week, for Norman Grant, President of the Seafood Importers Association of Australia, Man called on the Association to import Vietnam’s shrimps and catfish. He said he believes that Vietnamese products will meet the more stringent demands worldwide.

Grant said Australia wants the Vietnam Fatherland Front to supervise seafood producers in ensuring biological safety before exports and that 35 types of virus which may be contracted by shrimps should be strictly screened. He called on Vietnamese seafood producers to improve product quality to meet the stricter requirements from Australia.

Vietnam, Laos hold 27th annual border meeting

The 27th annual meeting between border delegations of Vietnam and Laos took place in Hanoi on Saturday. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Le Hoai Trung, Deputy Foreign Minister and Head of the National Border Committee. The Lao delegation was led by Foreign Minister Xalomsay Commasit.

Both sides reviewed their border cooperation and the implementation of bilateral agreements on border and territorial sovereignty over the past year. They held a meeting between border localities to discuss free migrants and unregistered marriages. Both sides agreed to jointly manage the borderline in accordance with two new legal documents on border and finalize the planning of Vietnam-Laos border gate system development until 2025 and vision towards 2035.

The two delegations agreed that the next meeting will be held in Laos in the 4th quarter of 2018.
