Vietnam, Nigeria seek to boost cooperation

Vietnamese Ambassador to Nigeria Pham Anh Tuan has said that Vietnam treasures and wishes to develop friendship and multi-faceted cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in economics, trade, and agriculture.

Ambassador Tuan presented President Tran Dai Quang’s credentials to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Abuja capital city. The Nigerian President applauded the achievements Vietnam have recorded in the renewal and national development process. He called on both countries to increase cooperative ties in areas that Vietnam is strong in such as agriculture and aquaculture.

South Korean president meets North Korean leaders

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Saturday met with high-ranking leaders of North Korea, who are visiting the South for the Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony.

The historic meeting began at 11am local time at the Presidential Palace in Seoul. The 22 people delegation, led by Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea, arrived in South Korea on Friday. Other senior delegates are Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean top leader, Choe Hwi, chairman of the National Sports Guidance Committee, and Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had a brief exchange with Kim Yong Nam and reiterated his expectation for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The 2018 Winter Olympics begins in Pyeongchang

The 2018 Winter Olympics opened in Pyeongchang on Friday with a colourful ceremony, cheering peace and future.

The 35,000 seat Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium was the venue of the event, which highlighted tradition and modernity of South Korea and the people’s hope for peace. As always, Greece began the parade, given the country’s history in the Games – the first modern Olympics were held in Athens. With the official motto of the 2018 Winter Olympics as “Passion, Connected”, the Winter Olympics will be ongoing until February, 25th. 3,000 athletes from 92 countries and territories will compete for 102 sets of medals.

Youth Month 2018: Creativity for national construction

The Youth Month 2018 and the tree planting festival will be launched in Quang Ninh province on February 25.

During the month, there will be celebrations of the 87th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the presentation of Ly Tu Trong award. A competition on creative ideas for student start-up will be launched. Through the Month’s activities, the Youth Union Central Committee aims to promote the role and creativity of young people in socio-economic development and building new style rural areas and smart cities.

US Secretary of State to discuss Syria, combating terrorism

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt and Kuwait from Sunday to Friday to discuss various issues, including the crisis in Syria and the reconstruction of Iraq.

In Jordan, the Secretary will meet with His Majesty King Abdullah II and Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Al-Safadi for talks on conflict in Syria, defeating IS and other terrorist groups, and the Middle East peace process. Both men will sign the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in economics, defense and security over the coming years.

Later on, in Turkey, Tillerson will meet with senior Turkish officials to discuss combatting IS and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party issue. He will talk about Hezbollah’s role in Lebanon and across the region. The Secretary will meet with senior Egyptian officials in Cairo to exchange view on Libya, Syria, and the Israeli-Palestinian issues.

Exhibition of 1968 Spring General Offensive opens in Ha Nam

An exhibition of the General Offensive and Uprising in the spring of 1968 was opened in Ha Nam province on Friday.

Spectators learn about the campaign through 100 documents and items which also highlight its historical values and the wise leadership of the Party and the Central Military Commission during the anti-US war of resistance.

The Spring General Offensive began in the early morning of January 31, 1968, when liberation forces simultaneously launched attacks on bases of US troops and the US-backed southern government in cities such as Hue, Da Nang, Can Tho and Saigon. The General Offensive marked a strategic turning point for the resistance war against the US and its allies. It also helped lead to the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification in 1975.
