Vietnam affirms value of Buddhism on International Day of Vesak

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, praised the values of Buddhism at an event to celebrate the International Day of Vesak in New York on Wednesday.

Talking about the religion’s role in Vietnam, Nga said that in the 2000 years since Buddhism was introduced to Vietnam, Buddhism has always represented a strong force for peace and harmony in Vietnamese society, making great contributions to national defence, construction, and development. The ambassador said Vietnam pursues a consistent policy of respecting and creating favorable conditions for people to exercise their right to freedom of belief and religion, promoting mutual respect, unity, and harmony between religions, as well as the cultural and moral values of all religions.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the focus in Buddhism on the inherent dignity of life finds resonance today in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He urged everyone to commit to overcoming their differences and care for the most venerable, truly leaving no one behind.

Syria complains to UN about US-led airstrikes

Syria’s media said Wednesday that its Foreign Ministry has submitted a letter of complaint to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council about airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition near the city of Hasakah on Tuesday.

Damascus said the continuation of the coalition’s massacres of Syrian people is aimed at undermining Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and prolonging the crisis in Syria. The letter also accused Washington of systematic support for the Islamic State.

The Ministry urged the UN Security Council to take responsibility for international peace and security, prevent the recurrence of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the coalition, and put an end to its illegitimate presence on Syrian soil.

The US-led coalition of more than 70 members has been conducting military operations against ISIS in Syria and Iraq since September 2014. The coalition’s strikes in Iraq have been conducted without permission from President Bashar al-Assad’s government or the UN Security Council.
