Race for Asia’s Top Research Provider Tightens as Morgan Stanley and Citi Claim Top Honors on Institutional Investor’s All-Asia Research Team Survey

NEW YORK, May 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As the attractiveness of Asia as an investment market persists and the progressively competitive provider market increases transparency between buy/sell-side relationships, driven in part by the back drop of MiFID II regulations, this year’s All-Asia Research Team survey was met with a 17% increase in voter participation leading to deep, record breaking results.

For a second consecutive year, Morgan Stanley clenched first-place on Institutional Investor‘s exclusive annual team-based ranking of sell-side analysts with 34 positions, while Citi took home first place on the inaugural individual analyst-based ranking with 43 positions.

After leading by three clear positions in 2017, this year was much tighter with UBS only one seat behind Morgan Stanley in second place, and a mere five points separating Bank of America Merrill Lynch in fourth place from Morgan Stanley – suggesting competition is increasing with the drive to secure revenues in a post-MiFID II environment.

On the individual analyst-based leaders table, Citi led with 43 positions with Morgan Stanley trailing behind in second place with 35 positions. Bank of America Merrill Lynch and UBS tied in a very close third place with 34 positions apiece.  Credit Suisse secured fifth place, earning 25 positions and rounding out this year’s top 5 winners circle.

“Asia’s role as the engine room of global economic growth persists,” said Cara Eio Head of Research, Asia. “As does the competition to deliver the best overall research product for investors to support their investment decisions. This competition and diversity of research offering and providers is healthy for investors, corporates and markets alike.”

The 2018 All-Asia Research Team reflects the opinions of more than 4,703 portfolio managers and analysts at 1,381 institutions that collectively manage an estimated $1.9 trillion in Asian equities.

70 young individuals honored for following Ho Chi Minh’s example

A ceremony honoring 70 outstanding young people for following Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts, morality, and style was held on Tuesday in Hanoi by the Youth Union.

The honorees included students, businessmen, scientists, and managers of organizations.

Secretary of the Party Committee of the Central Agencies Block Son Minh Thang called on Youth Union members and other young people to continue following President Ho Chi Minh’s example:

Living up to the award is even more difficult than earning it. President Ho Chi Minh once said: A living example is more worthy than a hundred speeches. I hope you expand your achievements and continue working hard to become excellent role models for Vietnam’s young people in the Party, State, Fatherland Front, and other politico-social organizations.

UN asks companies to tighten sanctions on North Korea

UN sanctions experts are asking global commodity trading firms and oil companies to list the steps they are taking to prevent illegal oil shipments from reaching North Korea, said Hugh Griffiths, coordinator of the UN panel of experts on North Korea.

He said that in May the panel sent requests to 24 major global commodity trading companies that focus on oil. But he didn’t mention the name of the companies. Illegal oil and refined petroleum shipments to North Korea are still being delivered, despite UN Security Council sanctions, he said.

NA discusses amendments to Law on Planning, Law on Cultivation

The National Assembly discussed the bill on amendments to the laws related to Law on Planning during the Assembly’s mid-year session in Hanoi on Wednesday.

In its report, the government proposed to revise 27 laws to match the bill on amendments to the laws related to Law on Planning. At this session, deputies will comment on 13 laws related to the Law on Planning. They stressed the need to promulgate the Law on Amendments to the Law on Planning to avoid legal vacancies and problems in verifying, approving, and implementing plans of sectors, thus simplifying administrative procedures in business and investment.

Discussing the Law on Cultivation, deputies said the law should live up to the development of agriculture in Vietnam. Trinh Ngoc Phuong, a deputy for Tay Ninh province, said: Our agriculture faces numerous problems. Many products can’t find consumption markets. We are investing more in agriculture and rural development, but don’t pay due attention to fruits and vegetables, which are Vietnam’s export staples.
