Outstanding community innitiatives awarded

12 outstanding community innitiatives were awarded at a ceremony Saturday as part of activities to mark Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18).

Mr. Nguyen Phuc Duc, Vice President of Southern Power Corporation, received the first prize for an innitiative of improving oxygen fans to save electricity in shrimp raising. “The idea was based on practical manufacturing demands in the Mekong delta,” he said, “After 1 year of implementation, we have saved 38.7% of electricity consumption, which helps saved 4% of direct cost for farmers. If the project is applied at a larger scale, we will save much more electricity, thus contributing to the efficient use of national energy.

Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh applauded the positive influence of the contest.I call on people of all backgrouds inside and outside of Vietnam to better support the community innitiatives,” she said, “Efforts should focus more on urban civillization, new rural development, security and defense, and political stability.

US President: 12 June summit on track

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that his Singapore Summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would take place on June 12.

He made the announcement at the end of a meeting in the White House with North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol, who delivered a letter from the North Korean leader to President Trump. Trump said the meeting will be a good start for bilateral ties and spoke highly of the letter. He admitted that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a long process but will achieve ultimate success.

China, EU hold strategic dialogue

China and the European Union have committed to deepening their strategic cooperation and protecting multilateralism.

The commitment was made at the 8th round of the high-level strategic dialogue in Brussels on Friday co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Minister Wang called on both sides to strengthen strategic communication and coordination in international affairs. He said “China and the EU should work together to maintain the multilateral international regime centered around the United Nations, to promote political settlements of regional hotspot issues, and to reform and improve the global governance system.”

Ms. Mogherini agreed on the importance of the EU-China relations, saying the EU is ready to work with China to maintain and consolidate the multilateral system with the United Nations being the core and law-based international order.

American Photography Assiociation opens exhibition in Hanoi

148 photos from members of the American Photography Assiociation are on display at an international photo exhibition in Hanoi.

The exhibition, opened on Saturday, features beautiful landscapes and people from photographers’ hometown or places they pass by. The photos are displayed on categories such as portraits, animals, nature, and black and white.

The exhibition runs until June 17 in Hanoi, then opens in Ho Chi Minh City from July 21 to August 5.

US vetoes UN resolution denouncing violence against Palestinians

The US vetoed on Friday a Kuwait-drafted UN Security Council resolution that condemned Israel’s use of force against Palestinian civilians, calling for the protection of Palestinians in Gaza.

The meeting was chaired by Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia. Ten of the council’s 15 members including China, France, and Russia voted for the resolution. The UK is among four countries abstaining. However, the resolution was not adopted because the US voted against it.

45th anniversary of Vietnam, Italy diplomatic ties marked in HCM city

The Italian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City held a ceremony on Friday to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the National Day of Italy and the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Italy.

Italian Consul General to Ho Chi Minh City Dante Brandi said that over the past 45 years, the relationship between the two countries has been strengthened and developed, particularly after an agreement on strategic cooperation was signed five years ago.

Ho Chi Minh City and Italian localities will foster cooperation in potential areas and boost exchange of visits.
