US delegation holds 3rd round of summit prep talks with North Korea

According to Yonhap news agency, a US delegation held the third round of summit preparation talks with North Korea’s team in the border village of Panmunjom on Saturday.

The US delegation was led by Sung Kim, US ambassador to the Philippines and the North’s team was led by Pyongyang’s Vice Foreign Minister, Choe Son-hui. The two previous rounds of talks took place in the same place on May 27 and May 30.

Earlier, Kim said the discussion was moving in the right direction, but added that there was still much work left before nailing down the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, to be held on June 12 in Singapore.

Catalonia government sworn in

New government of Catalonia was sworn in on Saturday, a move to end direct rule from Madrid by Spain’s central government.

13 members of the Executive Council of Catalonia led by Quim Torra took oaths of allegiance to Catalonia in Barcelona.

At the event, Catalan chief Torra expressed his wishes to meet with new Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who came to power after he successfully ousted Mariano Rajoy, who lost a no-confidence vote in parliament on Friday.

Bac Ha Tourism Culture Week opens

The Bac Ha Tourism Culture Week 2018 opened on Saturday in Lao Cai province, under the theme Colors of the White Highland.

The event features a traditional horse race, a cycling tournament from Bac Ha (Lao Cai) to Xin Man (Ha Giang), and a street festival with traditional performances and arts. The Bac Ha Tourism Culture Week 2018 runs until June 9.

Shang-ri La Dialogue 2018: Vietnam seeks defense ties with Australia, France, Japan

Defence Minister Ngo Xuan Lich on Saturday had bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Australia, France, and Japan, on the sidelines of the Shang-ri La Dialogue 2018 in Singapore.

Mr. Lich and Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne applauded development in Vietnam-Australia relations, noting that defence cooperation has been in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed in 2010. Mr. Lich thanked the Australian Defence Ministry for providing language training for Vietnamese medical and engineer corps in peacekeeping activities of the UN.

Mr Lich and Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera agreed on future cooperation in delegation exchanges, recovery from war consequences, natural disasters response, and defence industry between Vietnam and Japan.

Meeting with French Defence Minister Florence Parly, Mr. Lich said Vietnam is always supportive of France’s efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the region and cooperation with ASEAN. Both called for more cooperation opportunities in the fields of mutual interests.

Vietnam marks 70th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal for patriotic emulation

The Vietnam People Army’s General Department of Politics hosted a talk in Hanoi on Saturday night, where the army’s staff exchanged views with exemplary people who are heroes of the armed forces, heroes of labor, and others who have made great contribution to the army building and national construction and defense.

Lieutenant colonel Ngo Hong Son of the Air Defense Force has undertaken many rescue missions in Vietnam’s sea and islands. He said: I have accomplished our tasks no matter how tough the tasks are. I am honored to be a pilot. It’s a sacred task of defending the fatherland’s sea and islands and helping the fishermen. Our flights have asserted Vietnam’s sovereignty.

On Saturday, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor held a get-together with labor heroes and outstanding workers, who are in Hanoi to attend a meeting to mark the 70th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal for patriotic emulation. Delegates highlighted the outcomes of their work and their contributions to national unity. Tran Hong Quang said following the President’s appeal, he and his colleagues have worked harder to make a better society: After serving the army, I am involved in managing state-owned enterprises. I and other staff have responded to emulation campaigns launched by ministries and sectors. I always try my best to implement Uncle Ho’s teachings. I am well aware that the patriotic emulation movement will make collectives and individuals successful.

The same day, the Vietnam Women Union and the Ministry of Public Security hosted meetings with exemplary people who have excelled in their work and life.

Singapore to bear some costs of June 12 summit

Singaporian defence minister Ng Eng Hen said on Saturday that Singapore will bear some of the cost of the planned summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

He said Singapore is determined to successfully host the event and is willing to pay some of the bill.

Kim Chang Son, the chief of office for staff for the North Korean leader arrived this week in Singapore to meet US officials to work out logistics for the summit, according to the media.
