British PM appoints new Brexit minister

British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Dominic Raab as the new Brexit Secretary on Monday after his predecessor quit in protest over the government’s plans for a close trading relationship with the European Union.

Rabb’s appointment came after Davis quit his job and said May had given away too much too easily in negotiations with the EU. The resignation is a blow for May, who wants the support of Eurosceptic MPs for her proposed Brexit vision, which would form the basis of the UK’s position in ongoing talks with the EU.

Vietnam, US boost comprehensive partnership

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has welcomed the fruitful and diverse cooperation between Vietnam and the US, including cooperation in addressing war legacy.

At a reception for US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Hanoi on Sunday, Mr Trong praised Mr Pompeo’s visit, saying it will further the implementation of bilateral agreements. He said he believes the Vietnam-US relationship will continue to grow for the sake of peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

Mr Pompeo hailed Vietnam’s contributions to regional issues and said the US will continue helping Vietnam in its efforts to overcome war consequences. He told his host that the US backs ASEAN’s central role in the Indo-Pacific region, and supports freedom of navigation and peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea in line with international law.

During talks the same day, Secretary Pompeo and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh agreed to give priority to delegation exchanges, especially high-level visits and contacts, while continuing to view trade and investment as the driving force of the relationship.

Mr Minh, who is also Foreign Minister, praised the efforts made to achieve peace and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. He said Vietnam backs all constructive efforts through dialogues to achieve a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula, pledging to be an active and responsible member of the international community in this process.

Mr Pompeo said the US values friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam and expects Vietnam to be a strong, independent, and prosperous country that plays an increasingly important role in the region.

The two officials discussed the East Sea situation, and expressed concern about recent developments in the region. They re-affirmed their support for the peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of international law including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea as well as for the full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea toward finalizing an effective and binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

More businesses to benefit from Thriive project

More small-sized businesses will have the chance to access capital and consultancy to expand operations as the Thriive Hanoi project enters its 13th year in Vietnam.

Thriive Hanoi is a cooperative program between Thriive US and the Centre for Economic Development Studies of the School of Economics and Business of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The project offers interest-free loans to Vietnamese small enterprises to invest in machinery and technologies, expand production and sales, and improve social responsibility.

Participating businesses are given development advice and opportunities to link with other business support programs sponsored by domestic and foreign investors.

Vu Thai Thinh, a coordinator of the 2018 Thriive Hanoi project, told VOV at a seminar to introduce the project on Sunday: Since it began operations in Vietnam in 2005, Thriive has financed 150 enterprises. Each company is allowed to borrow between 2,200 USD and 9,700 USD interest-free. The company repays the loan, not in cash, but by providing free vocational training, products, or services to poor, disadvantaged people or people with disabilities. In 13 years more than 120,000 people have benefited from the project.

Thriive, a US-based non-profit charity organization, was established to reduce poverty toward sustainable growth in developing countries. The Thriive project has also been implemented in Palestine, Kenya, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.
