Patients Rate their Clinical Trial Experience Positively, but Trial Locations Still Pose Barriers to Enrollment

New Informa Pharma Intelligence survey uncovers patient sentiment on clinical trial participation

NEW YORK, July 27, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Informa Pharma Intelligence, the global business intelligence provider for the biopharma industry, released its first “Patient Perspectives on Clinical Trial Participation” report, which measured patient attitudes in relation to all stages of the clinical trial process following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study, conducted online in partnership with Rare Patient Voice LLC, the leading firm connecting patients and caregivers with opportunities to make their voices heard through surveys, interviews, and other studies, reveals how the appetite for engaging with these trials has changed in the past year and identifies what specific factors are driving and preventing initial participation.

“Patient feedback is crucial to improving the clinical trial process, not only so clinical trial sponsors can better the trials themselves, but also so they can eliminate enrollment barriers, maximize resources, and accelerate trial timelines,” said Mike Wenger, Vice President of Patient Engagement at Informa Pharma Intelligence. “Our study found that individuals are generally pleased with their clinical trial experience, but organizers could benefit from working more closely with physicians and being strategic about trial locations to boost enrollment and increase accessibility.”

“Considering the patient experience in the design of clinical trials is essential,” said Pam Cusick, Senior Vice President of Rare Patient Voice. “Improving the overall experience by encouraging physicians to share more regularly about clinical trials, making it easier for patients to participate, and providing updates and outcome data will ensure that more patients want to be part of clinical trials in the future.”

Physicians Play a Key Role in Enrollment

Even though personal physicians may not be directly involved in ongoing clinical trials, they do drive the majority of patient enrollment. According to the survey, nearly half (48%) of respondents who had participated in a clinical trial found out about the trial through their physician. Even 81% of respondents who had NOT participated in a clinical trial indicated they’d be more likely to participate if they were referred by their physician.

Conversely, only 23% of respondents who had participated in clinical trials used ClinicalTrials.gov when searching for trial information, indicating that direct referrals from medical personnel are nearly twice as likely to result in enrollment. While this platform can be a reliable source of information, it is clear that targeted recommendations from trusted physicians carry more weight when it comes to participation.

Location Creates Barriers to Participation

Moving forward, trial sponsors should prioritize location during the planning process to not only make the trial more accessible, but to also maximize enrollment potential and reduce the chance of investing in non-performing sites.

Nearly half (47%) of respondents who had not participated in a clinical trial said this was because they were unable to find a nearby trial location which related to their disease or condition, and 67% indicated they would be more likely to participate if they found a suitable study nearby.

Patient Experience is Positive, but Communication is Key

Overall, 84% of respondents who had participated in clinical trials described their experience positively, and 86% expressed satisfaction with weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly communication from trial sponsors. However, sponsors should take special care to maintain this level of communication, as 34% of participants receiving communication less often than once a month felt that was insufficient.

Additionally, over 60% of respondents had NOT received results of the study they participated in, and 64% believed this to be important. These findings reveal a clear demand for sponsors to continue communicating study developments to participants, even after their portion of the trial has concluded.

In addition to frequent communication, a speedy enrollment process also contributed to positive patient feedback. Highly rated trial experiences also have ripple effects: 87% of those who had participated in a clinical trial said they were likely to participate in another, and 84% said they would recommend participation to others. Respondents also expressed altruistic motivations for repeatedly enrolling in clinical trials, with 29% citing a desire to help others and 25% hoping to assist in the search for cures and more effective treatments.

Research Methodology
Total sample size was 935 respondents ages 15-84. Fieldwork was undertaken in May 2021. The survey was carried out online.

Verisk’s AIR Worldwide Enhances Extreme Event Models for Japan With Release of Updated Earthquake and Typhoon Models

BOSTON, July 27, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Catastrophe risk modeling firm AIR Worldwide has announced the release of significantly updated AIR Earthquake and Typhoon Models for Japan. The past several years has reaffirmed the vulnerability of Japan to typhoons and earthquakes and prompted updates to AIR’s Industry Exposure Database, earthquake hazard and both earthquake and typhoon vulnerability including building, contents and business interruption damage. These updated models provide insurance and reinsurance companies with a comprehensive view of risk and account for insurance policy conditions specific to Japan. AIR Worldwide is a Verisk (Nasdaq:VRSK) business.

“Ten years ago the M9.0 megathrust Tohoku earthquake became the most widely instrumented earthquake in history, generating copious ground motion data, damage observations, and detailed insurance claims data,” said Dr. Kazuya Fujimura, vice president and managing director, Verisk. “The Tohoku earthquake not only informed the view of risk associated with megathrust earthquakes in Japan but also globally, e.g., the Hikurangi subduction zone in New Zealand and the Lesser Antilles subduction zone in the Caribbean, where, with limited historical data, the possibility of mega (M9.0 or larger) earthquakes cannot be ruled out.”

The AIR Earthquake Model for Japan is a fully stochastic model that captures the complex seismicity of Japan by generating events along known crustal faults, along and within subduction zones, and within different regions and zones with little to no historical earthquake activity through smoothed background seismicity.

Our updated Japan earthquake model is informed by the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion (HERP’s) most recent seismicity model but with modifications to the time-dependent rupture possibilities (TDRP) estimates for earthquakes on the Nankai Trough and some crustal faults to better reflect uncertainties in the HERP 2019 TDRP model and parameters.

In the updated AIR Earthquake Model for Japan, numerically simulated tsunamis generated by all M>7.0 tsunamigenic earthquakes from our time-dependent, stochastic earthquake catalog were used to determine coastal inundation and flow velocities. The stochastic catalog reflects AIR’s view on time-dependent rupture probabilities for different sources, including tsunamigenic ones such as those along the Nankai Trough. Our model incorporates the latest data sets, including detailed three-dimensional subduction interface/fault geometries, high-resolution bathymetry/elevation data with coastal levees, dikes and sea walls, regional tidal solutions to account for the effect of astronomical tides, and land use/land cover (LULC) data to capture land friction characteristics that impact runup extent.

AIR’s updated Japan earthquake model also incorporates insights into ground motion prediction equations, including the weighting of two produced after the Tohoku earthquake and three produced before, to provide more accurate ground motion calculations for megathrust earthquakes, magnitude saturation, and new magnitude scaling. In addition, our insights into buildings’ seismic response gained from damage observations, detailed claims data, and changes to design and construction practice as it relates to tsunami risk inform our damage functions. With the updated seismicity and ground motion modules as well as the latest understanding of the vulnerability of the built environment, AIR’s model presents the most realistic view of the earthquake risk in Japan.

“While no model can predict when or if the next large tsunamigenic earthquake in Japan will occur, using the updated AIR Earthquake Model for Japan, can help prepare for tsunami losses by providing a detailed and accurate view of tsunami risk in Japan, said Dr. Bingming Shen-Tu, vice president of research, AIR Worldwide.”

“In 2018 and 2019, four powerful typhoons struck Japan, incurring total insured losses of approximately USD 30 billion from wind and flood damage,” said Dr. Boyko Dodov, vice president of research, AIR Worldwide. “As is the case after any major storm or severe storm season, we have been analyzing and reanalyzing a plethora of meteorological data, market exposure and company claims data sets from these and previous historical storms.”

The AIR Typhoon Model for Japan is part of the AIR Northwest Pacific Basinwide Typhoon Model. Japan’s location in the Pacific Northwest Basin combined with its unique topography puts it at risk from typhoon winds, precipitation, and storm surge. The model is a fully stochastic, event-based model that shares a catalog with other AIR-modeled countries in the region, including mainland China, Southeast Asia, and South Korea. The Japan typhoon model captures the effects of tropical storm and typhoon winds, precipitation-induced flooding, and storm surge on insured properties in Japan.

Wind intensity computations are based on a storm’s intensity, size, location, forward speed, and direction, as well as the underlying terrain and land use in the region. The effect of extratropical transitioning is also included to accurately assess the full impact on properties due to precipitation from a tropical cyclone. Flood intensity computations are based on total accumulated precipitation both on-plain and off-plain, soil type, land use/land cover data, and topography. The model includes separate damage functions for wind, precipitation-induced flood, and storm surge perils. Additionally, the model explicitly accounts for the regional variability in wind vulnerability due to differences in regional construction practices. The model also considers the effects of existing flood mitigation measures and lessons learned from the 2018 and 2019 typhoon season.

The AIR Earthquake and AIR Typhoon Models for Japan are available in the 2021 releases of Touchstone® and Touchstone Re catastrophe risk management systems.

Metalist Naraka Hero NFT

The NARAKA HERO series of blind boxes is a collectible NFT licensed to MetaList Lab by the popular game “NARAKA: Bladepoint,” which is developed by 24 Entertainment and published by Netease.

After the sale ended, many collectors showed off their NARAKA HERO collections on Twitter, anticipating the upcoming collection, “Dragon” card.

“We believe that NARAKA HERO is an excellent collectible with both beauty and imagination. The market has also proved this to us. When the prices of cryptocurrencies BTC and ETH continue to fall, the price of SSR in NARAKA collectibles NFT even rises 25 times,” said Sharona, co-founder of MetaList, the publisher of Naraka Hero.

The current trend of cryptocurrencies continues to go downward, as to the NFTs market. The release of Naraka Hero has regained some confidence in the NFTs market, and the enthusiasm of collectible NFTs collectors has also stimulated the sentiment of the entire market.

The NARAKA HERO series of blind boxes is a collectible NFT licensed to MetaList Lab by the popular game “NARAKA: Bladepoint,” which is developed by 24 Entertainment and published by Netease. NARAKA has ranked first on the steam bestseller list when it began to pre-sale.

“The Oriental style shown in the NARAKA game fascinated me. When I tried this game, I felt that I was an oriental knight with a sharp sword and a kung fu. So I thought, if these items are made into art NFT collections, they will definitely make more people fight for them,” when talking about the origin of Naraka Hero, Sharona commented.

In the NFT design of NARAKA HERO, the exquisite animations of the six heroes in the game are mainly displayed, and the modern style ink-and-wash dynamic video carefully drawn by top masters makes the heroes come to life. Collectors can keep their favorite heroes by their side by collecting these hero cards.

“This release of NFT is the first attempt of MetaList, and it is also an excellent example of combining video games and NFT. In the future, we will continue to build a community ecology and create our own gaming IP collectible culture. We will also launch collections continuously. We welcome everyone to continue to pay attention to our Twitter and official website,” Sharona said in the end.

Vietnam pins hope on female weightlifter at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Five Vietnamese athletes will compete in four sports on the fourth official day of the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on July 27.

Weightlifter Hoang Thi Duyen is hoped to clinch a medal for Vietnam in the women’s 51 kg category as she was placed third amongst nine competitors in the final.

Duyen will begin competing at 13:50 (Vietnam time).

She earned a gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30).

Weightlifters brought home medals from two of the past three Olympic Games, including a gold by Hoang Anh Tuan in the Beijing 2008 Olympics and a bronze by Tran Le Quoc Toan in the London 2012 Olympics.

In badminton, Nguyen Tien Minh (the world’s No. 60) will play against Azerbaijani rival Ade Resky (No. 80).

Earlier, he lost to the world’s No. 3 player Anders Antonsen of Denmark.

At 18:20, 21-year-old swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang will compete in the 800-m freestyle against 33 rivals. Eight swimmers with the best performance will qualify for the final slated for July 29.

In rowing, Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao competed in the women’s lightweight doubles sculls – Final C on July 27 morning. However, as they ranked fifth out of the six teams in the repechage, their medal hope faded.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Hoang Thi Duyen unable to bring home medal

Female weightlifter Hoang Thi Duyen was not able to win a medal in the women’s weightlifting competition under 59 kg in the competition on July 27 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In the snatch event, Duyen registered a starting weight of 95 kg, but it took her two times to lift this weight. On her third try, the athlete decided to raise the weight to 98 kg but she failed to make it and ended at the 4th place in the event.

In the clean and jerk event, Duyen started with 113 kg and she succeeded in the first attempt. But when raising the weight to 119kg, she failed in both the second and third attempts. As a result, she only reached a total of 208 kg, ranked 5th overall.

Despite her best efforts, Duyen could not make a surprise at this year’s Olympics. In the women’s 59-kg category, Kuo Hsing-Chun of Chinese Taipei won the gold medal while silver and bronze went to athletes from Turkmenistan and the host country Japan, respectively. Notably, Kuo Hssing Chun broke Olympic records in all three events of snatch (103 kg), clean and jerk (133 kg) and general lift (236 kg). She also holds the world record in this category.
