Additional 3,000 medical personnel sent to southern localities

An additional 3,000 medical personnel from medical schools and facilities around the country will travel to Vietnam’s major COVID-19 hotspots this week to help fight the pandemic.

They will support Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Long An, and Dong Nai in testing and treating people for COVID-19.

More than 14,000 medical personnel have already been deployed to HCM City and other pandemic-hit localities in the south.

The Health Ministry has provided HCM City with 10 new testing vans, along with enough personnel and equipment to analyze 3,000 test samples per day.

Poland, China donate COVID-19 vaccines to Vietnam

Vietnam received more than 500,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Monday donated by the Polish Government.

Polish Ambassador to Vietnam Wojciech Gerwel handed over the vaccine batch to Deputy Minister of Health Truong Quoc Cuong.

Earlier, the Polish government announced its decision to donate AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam along with essential medical equipment worth 4 million USD, and its plans to transfer an additional 3 million doses of vaccines to Vietnam.

The shipment of essential medical equipment for COVID-19 prevention and control is expected to arrive Vietnam in early September.

Also on Monday, a ceremony was held at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi to receive 200,000 doses of Vero-Cell vaccine and more than 200,000 disposable syringes from China’s Defense Ministry for the Ministry of Vietnam’s Defense Ministry.

Vero-Cell vaccine produced by Sinopharm has been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and used in more than 70 countries.

Top legislator underlines AIPA’s cooperation in digital transformation, COVID-19 response

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue has suggested members of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) complete legal framework and remove barriers to facilitate the implementation of digital transformation policies.

Addressing the 42nd AIPA General Assembly via videoconference on Monday, Mr. Hue said it is necessary to facilitate equitable access to digital services for people and businesses, increase digital literacy for the vulnerable groups, offer fair, equitable and affordable digital services, and promote the development of a digital economy and society.

He proposed encouraging the Governments of ASEAN members to carry out concrete programs, action plans and strategies pertaining to digital development.

Mr. Hue called for AIPA’s solidarity and common responsibility in cooperating and sharing experience, especially the application of science, technology, to effectively control COVID-19.

“AIPA should empower member governments to actively deal with the pandemic, minimize losses and soon recover their economies following the pandemic,” he said.

Amnesty Council reviews nominations for amnesty in 2021

The Central Advisory Council on Amnesty met on Monday to review the list of inmates nominated for amnesty on a case-by-case basis before it is submitted to the President for approval.

The upcoming amnesty will be the first since the 2018 Law on Amnesty was adopted, said Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh, who is Chairman of the Council.

“The Council carries a heavy responsibility in checking records and reviewing all amnesty applications and making sure that the amnesty will be granted to qualified prisoners and through a fair and transparent process,” he noted.

7 rounds of amnesty were conducted from 2009 to 2016, benefitting more than 87,000 inmates. The rate of relapse into crime among amnesty beneficiaries was reportedly to be as low as 1.18% during the period.

Malaysia’s new PM urges unity to fight pandemic, revive economy

Malaysia’s new Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Sunday called on the people to believe in the new government and unite to help Malaysia fight the COVID-19 pandemic and revive the economy.

He made the statement during his first appearance on national television and social media.

Mr. Yaakob thanked King Al-Sultan Abdulah and the people for their trust.

He called on all lawmakers and parties to set aside their conflicts and do their best for the good of the Malaysia family.

He said he will invite opposition leaders to join the government’s special committees to address the COVID-19 crisis, and is seeking to stabilize politics in Malaysia after years of turmoil.

Singapore Prime Minister affirms importance of ties with US

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday that his country valued the United States renewing its ties with the city-state during a joint news conference with visiting US Vice President, Kamala Harris.

He noted that Singapore has assisted the US in carrying out the evacuation in Afghanistan – a mission that Washington is trying to complete by August 31.

Vice President Harris affirmed the US’s enduring relationship with Singapore, Southeast Asia and to reinforce a shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

She also reaffirmed the US’s commitment to working with its allies and partners around the Indo-Pacific to uphold the rules-based international order, and freedom of navigation, including in the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam).

The US and Singapore reached security agreements that reaffirm America’s presence in the region through “rotational deployments of US P-8 aircraft and littoral combat ships to Singapore,” according to a fact sheet of the meeting shared by the White House.

Harris will give a speech on Tuesday to emphasize the importance of the partnership and areas of enhanced cooperation with Singapore, before leaving for Vietnam.

Singapore is not a US treaty ally, but remains one of its strongest security partners in the region with deep trade ties.

Japan urges Iran to return to nuclear negotiations

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Sunday urged Iran to return to negotiations with Western powers on the 2015 nuclear dealduring his first meeting with new Iranian President EbrahimRaisi in Tehran.

The nuclear deal is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The same day, Iran’s Foreign Minister-designate HosseinAmir-Abdollahian said Iran is willing to engage in “reasonable” negotiations that serve the Iranian people’s interests.

Earlier, Motegi met Iraqi President Barham Salih and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein in Baghdad.

US Vice President to visit Vietnam on August 24-26

US Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Vietnam from Tuesday to Thursday at the invitation of her Vietnamese counterpart Vo Thi Anh Xuan.

The information was released by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

At a regular press conference last Thursday, the Ministry’s deputy spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said visits by senior leaders and delegation exchanges at all levels between Vietnam and the US are all aimed at further intensifying the countries’ comprehensive partnership, for the sake of the two peoples and for regional and global peace, stability, cooperation, and development.
