NA Chairman’s visit to create momentum for Vietnam-RoK strategic cooperative partnership

The upcoming visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) by Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue will create a new momentum for the flourishing Vietnam-RoK strategic cooperative partnership, towards the 30th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties next year.

NA Chairman Hue is set to begin his official visit to the RoK on December 12 at the invitation of Speaker of the National Assembly of the RoK Park Byeong-seug.

Vietnam set up diplomatic ties with the RoK on December 22, 1992. In the nearly three decades, the RoK has been among Vietnam’s leading important partners.

The countries’ relationship was elevated to strategic cooperative partnership in October 2009 on the occasion of the Vietnam visit by then RoK President Lee Myung-bak.

Regarding the economic field, the RoK is among leading important partners of Vietnam, ranking first in terms of investment, with total registered capital worth 72.35 billion USD and 9,100 valid projects.

The East Asian country is Vietnam’s second biggest official development assistance (ODA) provider, with 1.5 billion USD in the 2016-20, extended to 2030; and ranks second in terms of trade as bilateral trade hit 48.5 billion USD in eight months of 2021, a year-on-year increase of 17.4 percent.

The RoK is also the second key labour export market of Vietnam and Vietnamese labourers represent the second largest group of foreign workers in the RoK, with about 48,000.

The RoK has emerged as a major source of holidaymakers in Vietnam over the years. In 2019, about 4.2 million Korean tourists travelled to Vietnam, up 23.1 percent, and 550,000 Vietnamese came to the RoK, surging 21.9 percent against the previous year.

The two countries have signed numerous cooperation agreements in culture-art, sports, youth exchanges and education. The RoK government and businesses have supported Vietnam’s COVID-19 fight, especially in vaccine and medicine, along with pharmaceutical development and health care capacity improvement.

The RoK supported more than 1 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam and is keen to offer medical assistance to Vietnam in the time to come.

Furthermore, Vietnam and the RoK have enhanced cooperation in the fields of agriculture, jurisdiction, science-technology, people-to-people exchanges and collaboration between the countries’ localities.

In an interview granted to Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Seoul, the RoK’s NA Speaker Park Byeong-seug said the upcoming visit by NA Chairman Hue will deepen the countries’ bilateral relations on multiple levels: between Heads of State, Speakers, and parliamentarians.

He affirmed that Vietnam is a pivot country in the RoK’s New Southern Policy.

During his trip, the Vietnamese NA Chairman will affirm Vietnam’s stance on support for the elevation of the two countries’ strategic cooperative partnership to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, Chairman of the NA’s Committee for External Relations Vu Hai Ha told reporters prior to the visit.

Top legislator’s visit to strengthen Vietnam-RoK relations: Ambassador

Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue’s upcoming official visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) plays an important role in elevating the Vietnam-RoK relations, and coveys a message on determination of the countries’ senior leaders in resuming visits by high-ranking officials and people-to-people exchange.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Nguyen Vu Tung made the remark during an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency on the threshold of the visit, which will start on December 12.

Tung said that the Vietnam-RoK relations have thrived in a fast and effective manner across all spheres.

The countries maintained contacts high-ranking officials via both in-person and virtual meetings amid COVID-19. Diplomatic activities reflecting mutual understanding and trust between the countries have been strengthened.

The ambassador underlined that economic cooperation is considered a key factor and greatly contributes to the bilateral relations, even in the context of COVID-19.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam-RoK trade hit 56.4 billion USD in the first nine months of 2021, posting a year-on-year expansion of 18.7 percent.

The RoK has been among leading foreign investors of Vietnam. The country channelled 4.36 billion USD into Vietnam in 11 months of this year, up 20 percent compared to the same period last year.

As of late November, total registered capital of the RoK had reached 74.14 billion USD with 9,203 valid projects, coming first in terms of registered capital and project number out of 141 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.

The Northeastern Asian nation is the second largest official development assistance (ODA) provider of Vietnam, offering 1.5 billion USD in the 2016-20.

It is also the second major labour market of Vietnam and the two sides renewed a memorandum of understanding on the issue this year.

The RoK is a significant source of tourists for Vietnam and the tourism cooperation is projected to recover in the coming time.

More than 216,000 Vietnamese are living in the RoK, and the RoK community in Vietnam comprises about 160,000 people. Over 60 Vietnamese localities inked cooperation agreements with their RoK counterparts.

The countries’ successful cooperation has offered a new international position for both nations, the diplomat said.

Vietnam and the RoK are joining hands in the implementation of the RoK’s New Southern Policy and cooperation programmes in the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), thereby contributing to peace, stability in the region and maintaining ASEAN’s central role.

The visit will demonstrate Party and State leaders’ attention to the Vietnamese community in the RoK, Tung said, adding during his trip, the NA Chairman will attend an inaugural ceremony of the new headquarters of the Vietnamese Embassy in the RoK.

The ambassador said that Vietnam and the RoK hold huge potential and opportunities for cooperation thanks to political determination and vision of the two countries’ leaders, together with similarities in the nations’ history and culture./.
