Exhibition raises public awareness on plastic waste reduction

An exhibition on plastic waste reduction opened in Hanoi on January 7, aiming to help change citizens’ mindset and behavior regarding the use of plastic bags and other single-use plastic products.

It is co-organised by the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE) and the World Wide Fund for Nature in Viet Nam (WWF-Viet Nam).

Nguyen Trung Thang, deputy director of ISPONRE, said the exhibition is expected to help visitors gain a better insight into the matter.

ISPONRE is working with the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade to establish an alliance of 15 retailers who agree to limit the use of single-use plastic bags, as part of a project funded by the EU and Germany, he said.

Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, Director of WWF Vietnam’s Plastic Waste Reduction Programme, said the event targets enterprises and consumers, offering them a more comprehensive view of the plastic pollution crisis, and pushing for their behavior changes towards sustainable business and consumption practices, especially during the peak shopping period before the upcoming Lunar New Year, the country’s longest and most important holiday.

Taking place at the Vincom Mega Mall Royal City, the exhibition lasts until January 16.

Renowned food culture helps promote Vietnamese tourism

As part of the Government’s cultural development strategy, Vietnam aims to have three cities in the UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network across many fields, including cuisine, by 2030.

In addition, the Government plans to boost the use of Vietnamese food in cultural tourism over the next decade, helping revive an industry badly affected by the pandemic. A few Vietnamese dishes have already made a mark on the global cuisine scene.

Pho is considered one of the most typical dishes of Vietnamese people.

In addition to the traditional pho with broth, there are also vegetarian, rolled, fried and crispy pho versions, which suit the tastes of most diners, including those from overseas.

Since 2018, December 12 has been observed as the Day of Pho to honour Vietnamese cuisine both at home and abroad.

This year, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism and Google Vietnam coordinated to respond to Pho Day with the message “Get up early to eat pho with the city”. This is to widely promote pho to the public.

On the Day of Pho, Google Doodle also presented an illustration of the noodle soup in Vietnam and 16 other countries, including Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Lithuania, Poland, Thailand, the UK, and the US.

The description of the doodle said: “What makes pho distinct is a mindful cooking process to achieve multi-layered flavours and a clear broth. From ingredients like roasted ginger, fennel seed, star anise, and cinnamon for the simmered stock, the broth serves as the foundation for aromas and tastes for every palate.”

Following the honouring of banh mi (baguette) in 2020, the Day of Pho continues to be a practical activity launched by Google to widely promote Vietnamese culture, cuisine, and tourism to the world.

According to Nguyen Quoc Ky, Chairman of the Vietnam Cuisine Culture Association (VCCA), compared to a few years ago, Pho Day has grown to a new height. It is thanks to the initiative of the Tuoi tre (Youth) newspaper and the support of many units, artisans, and pho lovers across the country that have helped this dish make an important mark on the culinary map of the region and the world.

It’s noteworthy that the Vietnamese word “pho” was officially added to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary in September 2007. Two other Vietnamese words added to the prestigious dictionary are “banh mi” (Vietnamese baguette) and “ao dai” (Vietnamese national costume), which bring pride to the Vietnamese language.

The attraction of Vietnamese cuisine

Vietnamese dishes win the hearts of people all over the world because of their balance of taste and nutrition, lots of green vegetables and each dish has its own dipping sauce depending on the region.

Many world-class chefs such as British chef Gordon Ramsay, the late American chef Anthony Bourdain and New Zealand chef Bobby Chinn also loved and promoted Vietnamese dishes.

Most notably, a picture of the then US President Barack Obama eating bun cha (fresh vermicelli with grilled pork) during his official visit to Hanoi in 2016 went viral on social media, making a big push for Vietnamese cuisine. Many international tourists have chosen to try this dish as soon as they arrive in Vietnam.

By October 5, Vietnam had had five culinary world records recognised by the World Records Union (WorldKings), including owning the most “strand and broth” dishes, the most kinds of mam (fermented fish) and dishes made from m?m with unique flavours, the most different kinds of special roll, the most dishes made from flowers, and the most dishes made from rice flour globally.

Contribute to tourism promotion

Chairman of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Trung Khanh, said that Vietnam’s cultural heritage and cuisine have played a positive role as a tourism ambassador, contributing to attracting millions of international tourists to the country.

In Southeast Asia, Vietnam is one of the countries that owns the most UNESCO World Heritage titles, Khanh noted.

Not only foreigners but also domestic tourists love food tourism. Therefore, local travel agencies are focusing on creating products that bring the most authentic experiences to visitors such as traditional food festivals, cooking classes and food tours, to help travellers fully discover Vietnamese delicacies.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently approved a project aimed at building a national brand on cultural tourism, with the ultimate goal of further developing the value of cultural heritage and cuisine, as well as improving the economic efficiency and competitiveness of tourism.

The project aims to position the Vietnamese cultural tourism brand based on Vietnamunique cultural values, focusing on heritage and cuisine, thereby forming a system of typical tourist destinations and products, which have high quality and value.

By 2030 cultural tourism is anticipated to account for 20 to 25 percent of the total 130 billion USD in total revenue earned from tourism services. Businesses are encouraged to invest in developing cultural tourism, especially cultural heritage and cuisine.

Vietnam’s ST 25 rice won the first place at the World’s Best Rice competition in 2019 and the second in 2020.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is restructuring the sector to boost productivity and foster sustainable development in a plan until 2025, with a vision towards 2030.

By 2025, Vietnam sets to have 3.6 – 3.7 million hectares of land under rice which will generate 40 – 41 million tonnes of paddy annually. The country also targets to export around 5 million tonnes of rice in the next five years.

Vietnam’s football to bolster international cooperation

Vietnam’s football will continue to step up international cooperation this year after achievements obtained in 2021, viewing it as a long-term development strategy.

Amid complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), as a dynamic and active member, has always proactively taken part in all events arranged by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the Asia Football Confederation and the Asian Football Federation (AFF), as well as frequently updated schedule of games and international events to devise suitable plans and make thorough preparations.

Due attention has been paid to the development of Vietnamese football. In 2021, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc met FIFA President Gianni Infantino in September while in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th session; and in Geneva in November during his visit to Switzerland.

At the meetings, Infantino spoke highly of Vietnam’s sport development policies, including for football, and underlined the country’s significant contributions to the football development in the continent.

FIFA will continue close cooperation with the VFF, he affirmed.

In addition to current cooperation agreements with the football bodies of the Republic of Korea and Japan, the VFF has reached out to its counterparts beyond Asia like France, Spain and Argentina via embassies and diplomatic programmes.

The partnerships are hoped to contribute to each nation’s football development, offering chances for young talents to join training sessions and play in countries with optimal football conditions.

Of note, the national U17 squad will be set up and join a training session in Germany under a cooperation programme between the VFF and Bundesliga, the top professional league in the European nation.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the VFF have launched the ‘UEFA Assist’ programme serving women’s football development since June 2021.

The UEFA presented 10,000 EUR (11,300 USD) to the VFF last year for the procurement of new training equipment for the third straight year.

With support from the AFC, the VFF also offered sporting equipment to five flood-hit central provinces last November.

A majority of credit institutions are optimistic about their business performance in 2022, according to the latest survey by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV).

The SBV’s survey on business trends of credit institutions in the first quarter of 2022 released this week showed 95 percent of credit institutions expect their pre-tax profit to grow this year, while 3 percent expect it to be unchanged and 2 percent are worried about decreasing profits.

Credit institutions believe their profits recovered and improved significantly in the fourth quarter of 2021, thus raising expectations for an improvement over the entire year.

As for Q1 2022 alone, 49.5 percent of credit institutions forecast their business results to grow compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to credit institutions, credit policies, interest rates and exchange rates of the SBV are still the most important factors to help them improve business performance. The liquidity of the whole banking system is expected to remain abundant, with more improvements over the first quarter of 2022, compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

The survey results show most credit institutions estimated the bad debt of the entire banking system would rise slightly in the fourth quarter of 2021, but they expect it to reduce slightly in the first quarter of 2022.

Credit growth of the banking system is forecast to increase by 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2022 and 14.1 percent over the whole of 2022, slightly revised lower than the forecast of 14.3 percent in the previous survey.
