Acronis’ Mid-Year Cyberthreats Report Finds Ransomware is the Number-One Threat to Organizations, Projects Damages to exceed $30 Billion by 2023

Increasing complexity in IT continues to lead to breaches and compromises highlighting the need for more holistic approaches to Cyber Protection

Acronis research unveils the top-10 most commonly impersonated brands in phishing emails.

The Acronis Mid-Year Cyberthreats Report 2022 found that brands such as DHL and Microsoft are the most commonly impersonated in phishing emails.

SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland, Aug. 24, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, Acronis, a global leader in cyber protection, unveiled its mid-year cyberthreats report, conducted by Acronis’ Cyber Protection Operation Centers, to provide an in-depth review of the cyberthreat trends the company’s experts are tracking. The report details how ransomware continues to be the number one threat to large and medium-sized businesses, including government organizations, and underlines how over-complexity in IT and infrastructure leads to increased attacks. Nearly half of all reported breaches during the first half of 2022 involved stolen credentials, which enable phishing and ransomware campaigns. Findings underscore the need for more holistic approaches to cybersecurity.

To extract credentials and other sensitive information, cybercriminals use phishing and malicious emails as their preferred infection vectors. Nearly one percent of all emails contain malicious links or files, and more than one-quarter (26.5%) of all emails were delivered to the user’s inbox (not blocked by Microsoft365) and then were removed by Acronis email security.

Moreover, the research reveals how cybercriminals also use malware and target unpatched software vulnerabilities to extract data and hold organizations hostage. Further complicating the cybersecurity threat landscape is the proliferation of attacks on non-traditional entry avenues. Attackers have made cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance systems a priority of late. Successful breaches using these various routes have resulted in the loss of billions of dollars and terabytes of exposed data.

These attacks are able to be launched due to overcomplexity in IT, a common problem throughout businesses as many tech leaders assume more vendors and programs lead to improved security when the inverse is actually true. Increased complexity exposes more surface area and gaps to potential attackers, keeping organizations vulnerable to potentially devastating damage.

“Today’s cyberthreats are constantly evolving and evading traditional security measures,” said Candid Wüest, Acronis VP of Cyber Protection Research. “Organizations of all sizes need a holistic approach to cybersecurity that integrates everything from anti-malware to email-security and vulnerability-assessment capabilities. Cybercriminals are becoming too sophisticated and the results of attacks too dire to leave it to single-layered approaches and point solutions.”

Critical data points reveal complex threat landscape
As reliance on the cloud increases, attackers have homed in on different entryways to cloud-based networks. Cybercriminals increased their focus on Linux operating systems and managed service providers (MSPs) and their network of SMB customers. The threat landscape is shifting, and companies must keep pace.

Ransomware is worsening, even more so than we predicted.

  • Ransomware gangs, like Conti and Lapsus$, are inflicting serious damage.
  • The Conti gang demanded $10 million in ransom from the Costa Rican government and has published much of the 672 GB of data it stole.
  • Lapsus$ stole 1 TB of data and leaked credentials of over 70,000 NVIDIA users. The same gang also stole 30 GB worth of T-Mobile’s source code.
  • The U.S. Department of State is concerned, offering up to $15 million for information about the leadership and co-conspirators of Conti.

The use of phishing, malicious emails and websites, and malware continues to grow.

  • Six hundred malicious email campaigns made their way across the internet in the first half of 2022.
  • 58% of the emails were phishing attempts.
  • Another 28% of those emails featured malware.
  • The business world is increasingly distributed, and in Q2 2022, an average of 8.3% of endpoints tried to access malicious URLs.

More cybercriminals are focusing on cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms. By exploiting flaws in smart contracts or stealing recovery phrases and passwords with malware or phishing attempts, hackers have wormed their way into crypto wallets and exchanges alike.

  • Cyberattacks have contributed to a loss of more than $60 billion in DeFi currency since 2012.
  • $44 billion of that vanished during the last 12 months.

Unpatched vulnerabilities of exposed services is another common infection vector—just ask Kaseya. To that end, companies like Microsoft, Google, and Adobe have emphasized software patches and transparency around publicly submitted vulnerabilities. These patches likely helped stem the tide of 79 new exploits each month. Unpatched vulnerabilities also tie into how overcomplexity is hurting businesses more than helping, as all of these vulnerabilities serve as additional potential points of failure.

Breaches leave financial, SLA distress in their wake
Cybercriminals often demand ransoms or outright steal funds from their targets. But companies do not suffer challenges only to their bottom lines. Attacks often cause downtime and other service-level breaches, impacting a company’s reputation and customer experience.

  • In 2021 alone, the FBI attributed a total loss of $2.4 billion to business email compromise (BEC).
  • Cyberattacks caused more than one-third (36%) of downtime in 2021.

The current cybersecurity threat landscape requires a multi-layered solution that combines anti-malware, EDR, DLP, email security, vulnerability assessment, patch management, RMM, and backup capabilities all in one place. The integration of these various components gives companies a better chance of avoiding cyberattacks, mitigating the damage of successful attacks, and retaining data that might have been altered or stolen in the process.

Tourism rebound drives Vietnam’s post-pandemic economic recovery: Singaporean daily

Vietnam’s tourism sector is set to witness strong growth in the next five years, with international tourism arrivals expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels in 2024, according to The Business Times of Singapore.

The daily cited Fitch Solutions’ latest report as saying that Vietnam’s tourism sector is forecast to record 11.1 billion USD in revenue in 2024, which would exceed the 10.8 billion USD earned in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. The takings are projected to rise to around 13.2 billion USD by 2026, with more than 22 million arrivals in the country.

Like many other countries in the region and beyond, Vietnam closed most of its border gates in 2020 and 2021, before reopening to foreign visitors last March.

Noemi Perez, General Manager of Melia Ba Vi Mountain Retreat, said the country’s flexible response policy has given foreign tourists more entry advantages, and that they assessed Vietnam as one of the countries with convenient entry procedures, a safe environment, and many places to visit.

After the pandemic, Vietnam is increasing incentives to gradually make up for losses in the pandemic.

Data from Google Destination Insights show that Vietnam is among the leading international destinations where accommodation demand surges this year. There are an estimated 100 hotel projects currently under construction in the country.

Observers held that this is a strong signal indicating that this market will continue growing in the coming years, The Business Times reported.

New initiative to recycle 3,000 tonnes of cartons

A carton recycling initiative will be piloted in Ho Chi Minh City from August 2022 to March 2023, aiming to collect and fully recycle 3,000 tonnes of used beverage cartons into new products, such as paperboard and eco-friendly roofing materials.

The initiative will be carried out by the Packaging Recycling Organisation Vietnam (PRO Vietnam) in collaboration with Sweden-based food processing and packaging solutions company Tetra Pak and Circular Action.

Eliseo Barcas, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Vietnam, said evolving from the model of collecting cartons through informal waste collectors initiated by Tetra Pak in 2010, promoting collection of used beverage cartons for recycling has always been at the core of the company’s sustainability agenda.

What makes this pilot programme different from its previous projects lies in its partnership with PRO Vietnam and the use of digital solutions from Circular Action to manage carton collection, according to Barcas.

Pham Phu Ngoc Trai, Chairman of PRO Vietnam, said it has decided to jointly execute this project in the hope of introducing a new approach to the collection of used drink cartons for recycling which has been a challenging task in Vietnam.

It also intends to help improve income for informal waste collectors and accelerate the growth of circular economy in the country, Trai said.

It will raise awareness of the waste collectors and engage them in collecting cartons at source. They will not only gain profits from selling the used cartons to recyclers but also receive financial support from the programme based on the volume of the cartons they collect.

Three aggregators – Lagom, Tien Thanh Paper and VECA – have confirmed their participation in the initiative. The companies will purchase used beverage cartons from informal collectors and re-sell them to Dong Tien Paper Factory in Binh Duong where the cartons will be recycled into new products. More aggregators are expected to join the programme to increase the collection volume in the future.

In early 2022, Tetra Pak announced an investment worth 1.2 million EUR (over 1.19 million USD) to expand the beverage carton recycling capacity at Dong Tien Paper Factory from 9,000 tonnes per year to 17,000 tonnes per year. The installation of the machines is expected to complete in early 2023 for the project to begin in the second quarter of the same year.

Binh Duong to support SMEs with digital transformation

Thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises in Binh Duong will receive support to effect digital transformation from the province People’s Committee and Ministry of Planning and Investment.

According to Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee Nguyen Van Danh, there are over 57,000 enterprises in the province, of which SMEs account for more than 97%.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, over 90% of SMEs were severely affected as the traditional market and production shrank.

SMEs need digital transformation tools to change the way they operate and do business in the new environment.

The pandemic has created a labour shortage besides hitting demand, and after it passes SMEs need to increase the use of digital technology to survive and function efficiently.

Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business that results in fundamental changes to the way it operates.

This is the right time for SMEs to adopt technology in management and make the digital transformation, and so it is essential to quickly have policies to help them overcome difficulties and resume operations, especially to make the transformation, experts say.

Danh said to persuade firms to embrace digital transformation, the province administration would create a legal framework to help them innovate and avoid possible legal risks.

The experts say policies that encourage enterprises and create conditions for them to adopt new technologies and digital transformation are needed, especially those that allow the testing of new products and technologies that still face legal obstacles.

The province needs to foster the development of large technology companies, raise awareness in society about the benefits of digital transformation and digital technologies and set basic standards for digital transformation to help businesses mitigate the risks involved, they say.

It needs to invest in technology infrastructure that only it could and adopt policies to encourage and support creative start-ups and develop human resources for digital transformation.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) along with the Ministry of Planning and Investment and Binh Duong province is set to implement a programme called USAID Linkages for Small and Medium Enterprises to improve supply chain links for SMEs and the ability of business associations to support the development of SMEs.

It seeks to enable systematic changes in the business environment from reforming institutions and simplifying administrative regulations and procedures to reducing the cost of implementing administrative procedures to improve the competitiveness of businesses, helping improve their ability to integrate internationally including the global SME value chain.

While FDI in Vietnam had reached historic levels, the spillover benefits for the domestic economy were affected by the limited supply chain linkages of Vietnamese SMEs, according to USAID.

The programme aims to address this gap by strengthening the capabilities of intermediary organisations in Vietnam, such as business associations, export development centres and SME promotion agencies, to facilitate the supplier-buyer relationships between Vietnamese SMEs and lead firms located in Vietnam and expand Vietnamese SMEs’ capacity to participate in manufacturing supply chains.

Vietnam to secure more Moderna vaccine for children in September

More doses of Moderna vaccine against the COVID-19 pandemic will arrive in Vietnam next month to be injected to children aged from six to below 12, according to the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE).

The institute said that Vietnam is currently running short of this type of vaccine to give the second jab for children in this age group.

It pointed out that many families had refused to have their children injected with the second dose, and a lot of children have to postpone the vaccination as they are sick or infected with COVID-19. Meanwhile, Moderna can only be used for a maximum of 30 days since it is defrosted. Therefore, many localities have to use this vaccine on adults.

According to the Health Ministry’s guidance, for children aged under 12, the first and second jabs must use the same vaccine.

The ministry’s statistics showed that as of August 23, the country had administered more than 255.1 million doses of vaccines, including over 14.8 million for children of five to below 12 years old.

Hanoi striving to improve Provincial Competitiveness Index

The People’s Committee of Hanoi recently directed its departments and sectors to focus on improving the city’s Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI).

According to the 2021 PCI rankings announced by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) on April 27, Hanoi ranked 10th among the 63 provinces and cities, down one notch compared to that in 2020 and 2019, but up 14 places against 2015 and 41 against 2012.

Last year, among the 10 sub-indexes, eight reported improvements, with that related to “Labour training” ranking first in the nation, up three places, and “Business support services” sub-index rising nine steps to the fourth place.

Two reporting decreases were the “unofficial costs” sub-index down three notches to the 29th place, and the transparency and access to information falling 23 steps to the 57th place.

To better the PCI index, the municipal People’s Committee asked departments, sectors and districts to take measures to improve sub-indexes reporting decreases, and those having low ranks.

The committee urged the municipal Department of Information and Communications to expand the application of information technology (IT) in the operation of State agencies, focus on developing the e-government, and build and implement several programmes and projects such as “Hanoi digital transformation programme by 2025, with a vision to 2030”, “Building a smart Hanoi by 2025, with a vision to 2030”, and “Hanoi’s e-government”.

The Office of the municipal People’s Committee, departments, sectors, and People’s Committees of districts and towns were required to publicise information on their websites and e-portals, and update and have clear guidance on the city’s construction and land use planning, socio-economic development plans, decisions, policies and administrative procedures.

Since 2005, the VCCI and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have cooperated to produce the annual PCI report to measure the quality of economic management, the level of convenience and friendliness of the business environment, and administrative reform efforts made by provincial governments, thus promoting the development of the private sector.

According to VCCI Chairman Pham Tan Cong, the PCI reports over the last 17 years have attested to the persistence and efforts of the Government, sectors and localities, and the business community in objectively and transparently recognising the improvement of the provincial-level business environment.

The PCI survey in 2021 shows that, in the context of difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the quality of provincial economic management in Vietnam is continuing to improve, Cong said.

Administrative reform has had positive changes, with increased efficiency and effectiveness at local levels. Anti-corruption efforts are also working to reduce the informal cost burden on businesses.

However, provincial authorities still need to step up the settlement of administrative procedures in the online environment, focusing on the fields of taxation, land, social insurance, the environment, construction, fire prevention and control, and market management, Cong stressed.

The PCI 2021 report also delves into the challenges faced by private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises, including how they responded to COVID-19 as well as their assessment of pandemic prevention measures implemented by local authorities.

Addressing the event to announce the index, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E.Knapper emphasised that the US government is proud to have worked with the VCCI over the past 17 years to help the PCI become an important tool for investors looking for opportunities in Vietnam.

This tool has stimulated improvements in the quality of economic governance in localities, thereby unlocking the door to private-sector-led growth, he said.

The northern coastal province of Quang Ninh ranked first the 2021 PCI rankings, making 2021 the fifth year in a row it has topped the charts.

The province was followed by its neighbouring Hai Phong city, the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, and the central city of Da Nang.
