Concert promoting peace to debut in Vietnam

A concert entitled “A mass for peace” will take place at the Hanoi Opera House on November 12-13 with the participation of 200 artists from the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet (VNOB) and other international choirs, the VNOB announced on November 2.

According to a VNOB representative, the world has experienced many difficulties and pain due to epidemics and disasters, so “peace” has become even more precious and the theatre wanted to organise the concerts to look forward to a better future.

“A mass for peace” is a work by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. The piece was released in 2000 and has been performed by orchestras and choirs around the world but has never been staged in Vietnam.

The work opens with the sound of a solemn marching drum, followed by sad and tragic melodies about the sacrifice and loss of the victims of disasters. It ends with the sound of new beginnings and aspirations for peace for people all over the world.

VNOB Director Phan Manh Duc said “A mass for peace” is a great event, praising peace and people’s desire to live in happiness, therefore, despite facing many difficulties such as human resources, expertise, equipment, practice time and language, artists are trying to make the work successful as a common message about a brighter future.

He also said that for the first time, the event will see the presence of four other international choirs in Vietnam, including Hanoi Voices Choir, Concordia International School Hanoi, V-Art Choir, and Hanoi Erato School./.

Boosting niche markets key to maintaining exports

Boosting Vietnam’s exports to niche markets was key to minimising the impact of a looming global recession, said Vu Ba Phu, head of the Department of Trade Promotion under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Phu said from now until the beginning of the year, global inflation would likely continue to climb with central banks raising interest rates and consumers cutting back on expenses. As a large exporter, Vietnam would likely suffer disproportionately in trade.

A global economy still recovering from disrupted supply chains and the pandemic required Vietnamese exporters to stay vigilant and up-to-date with market changes in their traditional markets and find ways to capitalise on new opportunities.

He urged businesses to hold more trade promotional events and seek out new markets in Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, Central Asia and Latin America for Vietnamese products.

The department advised exporters to invest and focus on a limited number of products with strong brand recognition and high quality at first to create a foothold in new markets. Successful examples included exports of Vietnamese mangosteens and durians to China which have enjoyed popularity among Chinese consumers after a well-implemented marketing campaign to introduce the fruits and brand-building activities in major Chinese cities.

The campaign also reminded exporters of the importance of fully understanding market regulations and safety standards, as well as consumer preferences and product promotions.

Nguyen Manh Hung, head of the department’s branch office in New York, US, said exporters must stay in touch with Vietnamese government trade representatives, which can provide them with all information on specific markets’ demands and help connect them to local companies.

Hung said there was still a lot of untapped potential for Vietnamese products among different consumer groups in the US, namely the Asian-American, African-American and Latino communities.

The single most important factor, however, remained a strong adherence to US safety and quality standards as well as product-origin regulations.

During the first ten months of the year, the US remained Vietnam’s largest export market with a total export value worth 93.4 billion USD while China was the Southeast Asian economy’s largest import market at 100.7 billion USD.

Vietnam recorded a trade surplus of 2.27 billion USD in October to top a ten-month period at 9.4 billion USD in surplus in comparison to a 0.63 billion USD deficit during the same period last year. The country’s industrial and manufacturing sectors continued to account for a large share of Vietnam’s exports at 89.1%./.

Vietnamese Party chief’s China visit further deepens bilateral ties: Chinese scholar

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong’s China visit from October 30 – November 1 played an important role in promoting the bilateral friendship and further deepening the bilateral ties in the new era, a Chinese scholar has said.

Talking with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA)’s resident correspondent in Beijing, Prof. Yang Danzhi, a scholar at the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the visit was both a “lodestar” for the development of Vietnam-China relations in the future and the beginning of a better and higher foundation for the bilateral relationship.

Yang stressed that during the visit, the two Party leaders discussed a number of issues in their bilateral relationship in a more intensive and inclusive way.

Amid changes in the world with new risks and challenges, Vietnam and China have seen a new starting point in their relations. Following the CPV’s 13th National Congress and the Communist Party of China (CPC)’s 20th National Congress, both sides need to upgrade and improve the quality of the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, he said.

According to Yang, the Party leaders shared experience in national governance and strengthening senior leaders’ strategic leadership over the bilateral ties.

In a joint statement issued following the visit, the two sides outlined new initiatives and recommendations, perceptions and conceptions, especially those related to enhancing constant cooperation and mutual exchange between the two Parties.

The scholar said via the visit, both sides made progress on the back of their existing common perceptions. Specifically, they reached new consensus on a green and digital economy, showing that Vietnam and China are seeking new growth areas for their economic cooperation, thereby breathing new life into and creating a new driving force for the bilateral relationship in the future.

They agreed on the connectivity between the “Belt and Road” Initiative and “Two Corridors, One Belt” framework. Coordination in infrastructure building and e-commerce was also mentioned in the joint statement. This provides good opportunities for both sides as e-commerce is growing strongly, he added.

In his opinion, the visit will have widespread impacts. In the new era full of turbulence, the two Parties must maintain their advancement and lead their countries to prosperity.

As both countries are stepping up the fight against corruption, the sharing of experience between the two Parties in this field could make them stronger and sustain strategic stability, he said.

Highlighting the effectiveness and orientation of the visit, he expressed his belief that the China-Vietnam ties will remain stable for a long time and reap new achievements./.

Vietnam works hard to prevent fishing vessels’ infringement of foreign waters

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will work with relevant ministries, agencies and localities to strengthen patrols, inspections and control at sea to prevent vessels from infringing foreign waters, and take thorough solutions to violations.

The ministry will coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to improve the enforcement capacity of competent forces to fully implement international commitments and treaties related to fishing, especially the Agreement on Port State Measures, to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in accordance with international practices, said Nguyen Quang Hung, deputy general director of the ministry’s Directorate of Fisheries (DoF).

MARD will also increase investigations and assess resources to ensure sustainable output. It will effectively carry out projects on the exploitation and protection of aquatic resources, and the Fisheries Development Strategy approved by the Prime Minister to ensure the sustainable and responsible development of the fishing industry and the livelihoods of fishermen, he said.

Earlier, at a reception for an European Commission (EC) delegation who came to Vietnam to inspect the country’s implementation of the EC recommendations, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh said Vietnam has been making all-out efforts to implement the EC recommendations on ending IUU fishing in the best possible manner toward a sustainable, responsible, and controlled fishing industry.

He also reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment and concerted efforts by authorities, fishermen and businesses to prevent and eradicate IUU fishing.

Hung also informed that the EC delegation visited the central province of Khanh Hoa to inspect its efforts to tackle IUU fishing and held a working session with the DoF in late October.

Vietnam, Czech Republic beef up cooperation in fight against crimes

The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and legal enforcement agencies of the Czech Republic have been working closely together to fight crimes, especially trans-national, hi-tech, drug, and human trafficking crimes while taking measures to protect citizens of each country, said Minister of Public Security Gen. To Lam.

During a reception in Hanoi on November 2 for the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Vietnam, Hynek Kmonicek, Lam suggested both sides continue facilitating visits at all levels, update information and share experience in combating organised, trans-national, hi-tech and human trafficking crimes.

He proposed preventing any individual or organisation from taking advantage of one country to sabotage the other; jointly ensuring security and safety of investment, trade, labour, study and tourism activities of the two nations’ people; guaranteeing legitimate rights and interests of citizens and representative offices of one country in the territory of the other, and cooperating to ensure security for visiting high-ranking delegations.

Lam suggested the ambassador discuss with the Czech Republic’s relevant agencies the possibility of negotiating a bilateral extradition agreement and signing a new agreement on judicial assistance in criminal and civil affairs in replace of the one signed in 1984.

He called for attention to coordination in fields where both nations have strengths like national defence, manufacturing, energy, mining, health care and agriculture, thus making the most of advantage brought about by the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

The minister expressed his belief that the diplomat will serve as a bridge to raise mutual understanding and promote cooperation in promising areas, particularly in security and order, and those within the framework of signed agreements.

Kmonicek, for his part, spoke highly of the traditional and fine friendship between the Czech Republic and Vietnam.

The ambassador pledged that in his capacity, he will do his best to reinforce the bilateral relationship, including ties in security and order./.
