HostDime’s Mexico Data Center to House GDL-IX, Latin America’s Newest IXP

HostDime’s GDL-IX peering exchange ecosystem will allow carriers and tenants to interconnect and be able to serve content to over 90% of the population in Mexico at the lowest latency.

Featured Image for HostDime

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, Feb. 23, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — HostDime Mexico is proud to announce that GDL-IX, Guadalajara’s first peering exchange, will make its home at HostDime Mexico’s current Guadalajara data center. Once HostDime completes its new Tier IV data center in Guadalajara next year, GDL-IX will be extended to the new facility as well. GDL-IX will be operational for tenants, carriers, and content providers to exchange traffic by March 17, 2023.

GDL-IX was recently approved to be launched by LAC-IX (Latin American and Caribbean Internet Exchange), an affiliate of LACNIC. This is HostDime’s second data center selected by an IXP to be a resident in a HostDime facility, with the first being the IX.br exchange point residing in their João Pessoa, Brazil, data center. HostDime is also working to set up CFL-IX (Orlando’s first peering exchange) in its upcoming Orlando Tier IV data center, which will be completed in Q2 2023.

IXPs enable networks to interconnect and exchange traffic. It functions as a central hub in the same way that an airport or train station facilitates the transfer of people between two locations. IXPs allow network data to be exchanged quickly and efficiently.

More importantly, it allows content to stay local; with GDL-IX being at HostDime’s Mexico Guadalajara data center, it will keep Internet traffic inside Guadalajara and reduce costs associated with the exchange of traffic between network carriers, content providers, and ISPs. This yields better latency, stability, efficiency, and quality, all at a lower cost. Multiple ISPs can connect their networks without having to pay for transit from another provider. This gives direct access to other providers across the globe, allowing for faster data transmission times with fewer hops than if each ISP had to rely on indirect routes through third-party transit providers. The GDL-IX peering exchange ecosystem will allow carriers and tenants to interconnect and be able to serve content to over 90% of the population in Mexico at the lowest latency.

Since its inception, HostDime has been a native carrier-neutral data center developer and operator, meaning there’s no catering to a specific fiber/telecom company. Most older-generation data centers were designed by telecoms, thus making it difficult by design for IXPs to be fostered by the network of community carriers. The network world is quickly evolving towards interconnection and a peering-first approach. With the ever-growing needs of applications and cloud providers connecting with others, this removes layers and hops, therefore increasing performance by minimizing latency.

HostDime designs its next-gen, purpose-built data centers to foster interconnection and future-proofing them by design. Four to six manhole entries are designed into each facility to ensure enough entry redundancy and capacity to provide entry to over 50+ carriers in HostDime’s diverse Meet Me Rooms over the next few decades.

HostDime is currently in the process of beginning construction on its second data center in Guadalajara, Mexico, dubbed “Andromeda”, which will be only the second Tier IV data center in Mexico. While GDL-IX will be initially housed out of HostDime’s current Guadalajara data center, it will later be extended to the new facility via a protected dual path fiber ring between both data centers. The new facility expects entry from leading local carriers such as Marcatel, MetroCarrier, Axtel, TotalPlay, Alestra, Cogent, Gold Data, Bestel, Flo Networks (Transtelco), and Telmex. This new data center will be one of the most interconnected facilities in Mexico in the next few years and will be a main interconnection point for transit and peering in Guadalajara.

HostDime is a global native carrier-neutral data center infrastructure company operating purpose-built public data center facilities in MexicoBrazilColombia, and our flagship facility in Florida, USA, and with owned networks in the U.K., India, and Hong Kong.

HostDime’s mission is to design, build, and operate purpose-built, next-gen, public data center facilities in emerging markets at the global edge. HostDime offers an array of cloud-native infrastructure products, including bare-metal servers, private cloud servers, colocation, and Hardware-as-a-Service in all our unique global edge locations.

Global Advanced Metals and Croom Medical Collaborate to Offer Tantalum Additive Manufacturing Capability

Tantalum Powder Printed Lattice

Tantalum Powder Printed Lattice

WELLESLEY, Mass., Feb. 23, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Global Advanced Metals (USA) and Croom Medical (Ireland) are collaborating to establish a turnkey tantalum-based additive manufacturing (AM) platform. A laser powder bed fusion GE M2 Series 5 printer has been installed within Croom’s facility, with the printer being fully dedicated to the use of GAM’s tantalum AM powder. With Croom’s years of successful contract manufacturing experience, the tantalum print capability is being offered by Croom as a contract manufacturing solution, bringing the advantages of tantalum to the medical device, aerospace, and related markets.

Global Advanced Metals (GAM), headquartered in Massachusetts, USA, has more than a 70-year history of innovation and manufacturing of high-grade tantalum powders for use in electronics and other applications. GAM has more recently developed a spheriodized tantalum powder, a necessary form for use in “printing” of tantalum parts.

Based in County Limerick, Ireland, Croom Medical (Croom) has operated for more than 35 years providing contract manufacturing services to medical device (and other) OEMs. In recent years, Croom has developed an extensive capability in AM technology in collaboration with a number of academic and state-sponsored institutions and has successfully manufactured more than 20,000 devices by AM technology.

AM has a number of key advantages over traditional subtractive manufacturing processes.  AM intrinsically uses less material than subtractive methods, produces more complex and lightweight part geometries, can be used for rapid prototyping, and manufactured parts can be ultimately printed in close proximity to point of use.

GAM and Croom are initially targeting the contract manufacturing of medical implants and components that would benefit from the enhanced performance offered by tantalum. Multiple papers cite advantages of tantalum-based implants compared to existing implant materials, including improved biocompatibility (reduced clotting), enhanced bone in-growth, tolerable to higher stress, and produces high surface friction promoting implant stability1,2,3,4,5. These benefits should lower the rate of surgery revisions, thus avoiding patient discomfort and unnecessary added surgery costs. Although use of tantalum in AM applications is relatively new, tantalum has been extensively and successfully used for many years in in-vivo surgical devices such as surgical staples, dental implants, and hip and knee implants. GAM and Croom believe that using AM technology to develop these devices will enable production of complex, porous, strong and lightweight structures.

As part of this collaboration, GAM will provide spherical tantalum powder, produced in its Boyertown, Pennsylvania, plant and derived from ethically and conflict-free-sourced tantalum raw material. The team at Croom will manufacture devices and components for customers using a recently acquired GE M2 printer 100% dedicated to the project and material. In a circular manufacturing cycle, tantalum raw material that cannot be reused in this AM process will be recycled back to GAM’s Pennsylvania facility. GAM’s raw material and tantalum powder expertise, Croom’s decades-long experience manufacturing, finishing and testing devices to medical device standards, and Croom’s proximity and relationship with many of the top device OEMs situated in Ireland, positions this collaboration for long-term success.

Andrew O’Donovan, CEO of Global Advanced Metals, added, “GAM is thrilled to work with such an experienced and trusted company as Croom Medical. In recent years, GAM has worked to enhance the production of ultra-pure spherical tantalum powder for 3D printing. GAM views the intrinsic purity and properties of tantalum as a wonderful fit for next generation implants and Croom is the company with the experience, capability and long-established customer relationships to bring this to market.”

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Acquires Majority Stake in Blue Ammonia Project in the Gulf Coast

COPENHAGEN, Denmark and NEW YORK, Feb. 23, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I), has acquired a majority stake in a blue ammonia project, which will be developed alongside U.S.-based Sustainable Fuels Group (SFG). The financial terms of the transaction are not disclosed.

The project has entered into an agreement with International-Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT), a terminaling and logistics company, to provide ammonia storage and handling services. Located along the Gulf Coast, the project has commenced detailed engineering (FEED) and will initially consist of two phases, each with a production capacity of 4,000 tons per day (~3.0 million tons of annual production from both phases) once operational in 2027.

Blue ammonia is a low-carbon approach to ammonia production which combines traditional ammonia synthesis using natural gas with subsequent carbon capture and storage process. The project will use Topsoe’s industry leading SynCOR™ technology to produce blue ammonia with the lowest carbon intensity and is expected to reduce CO2e emissions by 90% (Well-To-Gate) compared to traditional ammonia production, thereby abating 5.0 million tons of CO2 per year.

The project will form part of the CI Energy Transition Fund, which closed in August 2022 at the hard cap of EUR 3.0 billion, and like all current CIP Funds, is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) principally through the expected avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its investments. The CI Energy Transition Fund focuses on clean hydrogen, and other next generation renewable technologies to facilitate the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as agriculture and transportation.

Søren Toftgaard, Partner in Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, says of the acquisition: “We are developing a global portfolio of clean hydrogen and hydrogen-related products, such as clean ammonia. Blue ammonia is considered an important part of a successful energy transition, which can potentially help fill the ammonia shortage in Europe as well as being a steppingstone to the successful implementation of green projects, and we are excited to bring this project to the Gulf Coast region. Further, the agreement provides important diversification to our CI ETF I portfolio and can provide a platform for future hydrogen-related investments in the U.S.”

“IMTT is thrilled to support CIP’s development of this alternative fuels project,” said Chris Partridge, Executive Vice President of IMTT. “Additional clean energy sources, such as blue ammonia, are vital to advancing the global energy transition. We look forward to leveraging our terminaling experience and expertise to assist CIP in delivering this low-carbon fuel to the market.”

Institute for Economics & Peace, Lloyds Register Foundation Release Safety Perceptions Index 2023: Severe Weather & Rising Anxiety Lead Global Risk Poll

The second edition of the Safety Perceptions Index finds an increase in harm from severe weather and rising global anxieties associated with the state of employment, economic conditions, and ‘ambiguous risk.’ Uzbekistan leads the Index while Mali falls to last place, primarily driven by internal conflict and terrorism.

Safety Perceptions Index 2023

Safety Perceptions Index 2023

LONDON, England, Feb. 23, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today marks the launch of the second edition of the Safety Perceptions Index (SPI), a collaboration between Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a global safety charity, and the Institute for Economics & Peace, an international think tank.

Key results

  • There was a 5-percentage point increase in the number of people saying they felt less safe in 2021.
  • There has been a global rise in ‘ambiguous risk,’ the feeling that people are at risk but are unsure from what.
  • Both worry and the experience of harm in relation to food and water improved; however, low-income and conflict-ridden countries have recorded substantial deteriorations.
  • In 2021, more people reported experiencing harm from severe weather than in 2019, but levels of worry decreased.
  • Anxieties associated with employment and economic conditions rose between 2019 and 2021, likely caused by the economic downturn.
  • The country most impacted in the SPI was Mali, which has experienced two recent coups and has been racked by multiple violent conflicts.
  • Counterintuitively, the overall SPI score improved following the onset of COVID-19, likely due in part to COVID-related lockdowns and the restriction on movement globally.

The second Safety Perceptions Index report, released today, provides a comprehensive measure of global perceptions of safety. The report is based on two iterations of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation World Risk Poll, the first conducted in 2019 and the second in 2021, and provides commentary, trends, and insights into these two sets of data.

In 2021, the SPI improved globally across two domains – food and water and violent crime – and deteriorated in two – severe weather and mental health. Uzbekistan recorded the best overall score, while Mali recorded the worst overall score. Mali is currently suffering from a violent internal conflict, has high rates of terrorism, and saw its government overthrown in successful coups in both 2020 and 2021.

Sub-Saharan African countries are the most risk-impacted in the world. Many countries in the region are among those with the highest worry rates globally and are represented in the top five most impacted countries for food and water, mental health, and workplace safety.

The only domain in which the average levels of both worry and experience of harm increased was the mental health domain, likely due in part to the proliferation of COVID-19 lockdowns and other disruptions to regular social life. The World Health Organisation estimates that COVID-19 led to a 25% increase in rates of anxiety and depression, with women and young people hit the hardest.

“The Safety Perceptions Index 2023 report digs deeper into the World Risk Poll data to provide us with valuable insights into how perceptions of safety differ across countries, and how the various aspects of risk are connected,” said Sarah Cumbers, Director of Evidence & Insight at Lloyd’s Register Foundation. “The report will be useful in the decades ahead as it will provide insight into the shifts in perception that might be associated with any future pandemics or other global shocks, and how to manage those changes.”

Safety perceptions – the shifting risk landscape

Over half of the countries surveyed recorded substantial deteriorations in feelings of safety compared to five years earlier. In Myanmar, 11% of the population reported feeling less safe in 2019, rising to 59% in 2021. In Vietnam, 37% of the population also reported feeling less safe, an increase of 26 percentage points from 2019. However, many countries improved. In Sweden, the percentage of the population feeling more safe rose from 12% in 2019 to 32% in 2021. Zambia recorded a notable increase, rising from 19% to 37%.

Rise in ‘ambiguous risk’

The 2023 SPI report finds a rise in ‘ambiguous risk.’ This refers to people’s feeling that they are at risk, but are unsure from what. The rise in ambiguous risk can be seen in the responses to the World Risk Poll question on the greatest perceived threat in people’s daily lives. Between 2019 and 2021, the largest changes in response rates were for those saying that no risk existed in their lives, which fell by half, and those saying they did not know what their greatest risk was, which nearly doubled.

COVID-19 and risk

The 2023 SPI highlights the changing dynamics of risk that accompanied the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The world is less certain about its future than at any time since the Cold War. The pandemic continues to impact every corner of the globe, inflation is rising, Russia’s war in Ukraine has disrupted international relations, and economic growth has slowed and, in some cases, reversed. As COVID-19 only ranked as the fourth most cited threat to people’s daily safety, these findings suggest that it was the societal experience of the pandemic – more than the virus itself – that most impacted worries and experiences of risk.

Regional & country findings

  • Uzbekistan was the highest-scoring country overall and, on average, the Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia region had the best scores globally. This is a noteworthy result, given that countries in the region do not typically rank highly in other measures of security and development.
  • The worst-scoring country in the 2023 SPI was Mali, which has experienced two recent coups and has been racked by multiple violent conflicts.
  • On average, sub-Saharan Africa was the worst-scoring region in the SPI; all five countries with the worst scores are in the region, with four of them currently suffering from violent conflict.

NOTES TO EDITORS

The SPI report is available at: https://www.visionofhumanity.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/SPI-2023-1.pdf

The SPI report focuses on the risks with the potential to cause the most disruption and have the most significant impact on the lives of people across the world. It measures two themes: worry about harm and recent experience of serious harm, analysing them across five domains: food and water, violent crime, severe weather, mental health, and workplace safety. These themes and domains are combined into a composite score which reflects perceptions of safety by country and region. The survey was completed prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has significantly stressed global food supply chains.
