ASEAN, India discuss blue economy

Vietnamese Ambassador to India Ton Sinh Thanh underscored the importance of the blue economy in sustainable economic development at the second ASEAN-India Workshop on Blue Economy, which took place in New Delhi on Wednesday.

As co-chairperson of the event, he said that Vietnam and ASEAN consider maritime cooperation a priority cooperation area with India.

Secretary East of India’s Ministry of External Affairs Preeti Saran said India will earmark 190 billion USD to boost connectivity between its seaports and new economic development areas in the next decade. She invited ASEAN countries to join the project, which will initially focus on coastal special economic zones, investment consultation, maritime transportation, and tourism.

Workshop participants shared the hope that negotiations for an ASEAN-India maritime transport agreement will soon be concluded, ensuring a maritime security and safety, conducive to sustainable development.
