Brussels to close all nuclear power plants by 2025

The government of Belgium has endorsed an energy strategy, confirming its plan to shut down all nuclear power plants (NPP) in the country by 2025.

The bill on the NPPs’ closure is to be submitted to the Council of Ministers by May 31. Belgium currently has seven nuclear reactors generating about half of its electricity.

The anti-nuclear movement has gained momentum in Belgium following the Fukushima accident in Japan in March 2011.
