Germany: SPD agrees on coalition talks with CDU/CSU

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) leadership agreed Monday to enter into talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) alliance to form a new German government.

SPD set the conditions for upcoming negotiations with the alliance, including offers on economic and immigration issues. SPD opposed the coalition’s decision to delay family reunions for particular groups of refugees until March next year.

SPD leader Martin Schulz said negotiations with the CDU/CSU alliance will begin next month if its members agree at this week’s meeting.
