Germany’s Social Democrats agree to open talks with Merkel

The leadership of Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) on Friday accepted the recommendation of party leader Martin Schulz to begin exploratory talks on forming a government with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives.

Any final decision on supporting a coalition government with Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) must be ratified by party members at a special congress.

A Forsa poll for broadcaster ZDF showed that 70% of Germans expect a grand coalition.
