Obama urges Trump to send “signals of unity”

US President Barack Obama has called on President-elect Donald Trump to send signals of unity after a bitterly fought campaign. At a press conference on Monday, Obama suggested that Trump reach out to those who were discontented or fearful after his victory last week.
Former Goldman Sachs partner Steven Mnuchin was recommended by Trump’s transition team to serve as Treasury secretary. Mnuchin, CEO and co-founder of Dune Capital Management LP, was the Trump campaign’s national finance chairman and had been considered the leading candidate for the job thanks to his banking experience. Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani is also reportedly a top contender for the post of Secretary of State.
In her first public comments since Trump’s victory, National Security Advisor Susan Rice said America’s allies should expect the United States to continue to uphold mutual defense treaties. She added that Congress ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement will be difficult before the Obama administration leaves office in January.
