Pompeo reaches out to European counterparts amid Iran tensions

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke to German, French and British counterparts in recent days to discuss cooperation over Iran, a State Department spokeswoman said on Monday a week after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.

Mr. Pompeo underlined that the United States and its European allies share strong interests in preventing Iran from ever developing a nuclear weapon and in countering the Iranian regime’s destabilizing activities in the region, said spokeswoman Heather Nauert in a statement. The Secretary said Washington is working to reach a bigger deal with European partners toward a more effective agreement on Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
