UN asks Maldives to lift state of emergency

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged the Maldives government to lift its state of emergency and guarantee safety for its citizens, including judiciary members.

Guterres said he is seriously concerned about the Maldives’ escalating situation, particularly its declaration of a state of emergency and security forces march into the Supreme Court headquarters.

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on Monday declared a 15-day state of emergency. He ordered the arrest of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, and Judge Ali Hameed, accusing them of a coup attempt against him.
