UN to close five peacekeeper bases in Congo

The UN mission in Congo (MONUSCO) announced Wednesday that five UN peacekeeper bases in the Democratic Republic of Congo will close at the end of this month, describing it as a change in operational style.

MONUSCO head Maman Sidikou said all 5 bases in the restive eastern province of North Kivu will close by July 31. MONUSCO’s new operational strategies prioritize flexibility and mobility in military interventions. The new system will include air surveillance and rapid deployment in the event of any security incident.
