United Nations condemns attacks in Congo

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the recent spate of violence in the south-central Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, calling on the government to immediately dispatch a credible and impartial investigation.

In a press statement issued in New York, the UN Security Council expressed concerns to the recent reports saying that local militants illegally recruited child soldiers and killing civilians, describing these activities a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

The Council said Congo’s government bears the primary responsibility to protect civilians and urged the authorities to restore order. It also called on the government to immediately dispatch an investigation team to Kansai region and hold accountable all criminals.
