Money-making career: ‘Kala Porridge’, the signature breakfast dish in Surat Thani

Jok Kala’, the signature breakfast menu, the only one in Surat Thani Province, has passed the Halal standard. Sold out in no more than 2 hours.

Jok Maha Yat (Muslim) or Mae Yat (Thai Buddhist) Breakfast Shop is located opposite Chalok Rat 16 Road in Surat Thani Municipality. It is a breakfast shop on the sidewalk with colorful umbrellas for customers to sit from early morning, from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. It is full of both Thai Buddhist and Muslim customers who come to reserve seats to sip tea, coffee, and of course, the signature coconut shell porridge, which Mrs. Ha Yat (Ma Yat) Prasomkaew, aged 70, and Mr. Sutep (Pa Thep) Prasomkaew, aged 80, invented the breakfast recipe with tea since they were young lovers.

For congee or rice soup, coconut shells are used as containers. There are chicken congee, shrimp congee, sea bass congee, mixed congee, and kuay chap. All of them look delicious because they use fresh, clean ingredients, large pieces of sea bass, large shrimps, and delicious dipping sauce, which
customers really like. The prices are friendly and there are over 50 breakfast items to choose from, including steamed dumplings, steamed buns, sticky rice with custard, Chinese crullers, and grilled sticky rice, which Nang Mayat makes herself with the help of her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Mahayad said that before, the grandparents sold tea, coffee and breakfast in Khiansa District, about 60 km from Surat Thani town. However, since her daughter worked in Surat Thani town, her daughter saw that the grandparents lived alone and were old, and wanted them to stay in the town. So she came to stay with her daughter and felt bored. She used to work but didn’t do it, just sitting and lying down. So she told her daughter to sell tea and coffee in front of her daughter’s office. So her daughter invested for her. The first day she sold 10 years ago, she sold only one cup of coffee the whole day. But she didn’t give up. She sold for a year, 1-5 cups a day, selling continuously until she got customers. As for usin
g coconut shells as containers for porridge, her daughter was the one who came up with the idea.

Ms. Jantima or DJ Kha, a radio host and daughter of Mrs. Mayard, said that the reason she used coconut shells as containers for the porridge was because during the COVID-19 pandemic, she wanted it to be the signature dish of the shop, attracting customers. So, she searched the internet and ordered from villagers, which was what customers liked. Importantly, she uses fresh ingredients every day. The prices are not expensive. The prices of the porridge start at 25 baht, shrimp porridge at 40 baht, chicken porridge, sea bass porridge at 60 baht, and mixed seafood porridge (chicken, shrimp, fish, egg) at 100 baht. Tea and coffee are 15-30 baht per cup. They are sold from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every day.
