Vietnam documents 3,295 new COVID-19 cases on August 18

The national COVID-19 caseload rose to 11,376,571 with 3,295 new cases recorded on the past 24 hours to 4pm August 18, a three-month high, according to the Ministry of Health.

With 8,877 patients given the all clear during the day, the number of recoveries rose to 10,049,215. Meanwhile, there are 208 patients needing breathing support.

No death from COVID-19 was recorded in the past 24 hours. The total fatalities stood at 43,103.

On August 17, an additional 670,809 doses of vaccines were administered, raising the total number of doses of COVID-19 vaccines injected to 252,768,208./.

Namaste Vietnam Festival underway in Khanh Hoa province

Namaste Vietnam Festival 2022 opened in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on August 18 night to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence Day and the 50th founding anniversary of Vietnam-India diplomatic ties.

Organised by the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City and the People’s Committee of Khanh Hoa province, the festival will last until August 20 with various activities like art performances, exchanges with Indian artists and lamp lighting – a traditional Indian ritual praying for peace, happiness and prosperity.

Within the framework of the festival, there will be tourism promotion programmes and Farmtrips, said Le Huu Hoang, Permanent Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, adding that through the event, Khanh Hoa aims to promote its tourism to international friends.

Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Pranay Verma said apart from tourism, the festival is also intended to boost economic and trade ties between the two sides, expressing his hope that there will be direct flights between Khanh Hoa and India in the time ahead.

Vietnamese Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu highlighted cultural exchange between Vietnam and India over the past time, and noted his belief that after the festival, more programmes will be rolled out to consolidate the bilateral strategic partnership./.

Top tennis player enjoys record high in world rankings

Vietnam’s top tennis player Ly Hoang Nam has passed a milestone in his career when rising to the world’s No.332 in the latest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.

In early August, Nam made a great contribution to helping the Vietnamese tennis team win the Davis Cup Group III runner-up in the Asia-Pacific region 2022 and a ticket to play in the World Group II play-off next year.

With his stable performance, the player of Tay Ninh province may soon achieve his goal – entering Top 300 in ATP Rankings before 30 years old.

He is scheduled to travel to Thailand to compete at 2022 Nonthaburi Challenger from August 22-28./.

Winning over World Cup champion, GM Le Quang Liem to face “chess king”

Grandmaster Le Quang Liem beat 2021 FIDE World Cup champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda for the second time in four months at the FTX Crypto Cup on August 18.

After the victory, which helped him bag a reward of 7,500 USD, the grandmaster will face “chess king” Magnus Carlsen in the fourth round of the tournament.

Four months ago at the Oslo Esports Cup, Liem defeated Jan-Krzysztof Duda 4-2. However, he came second at the tournament as he was one point behind Duda. At that tournament, Liem shocked the world as he defeated both “chess king” Magnus Carlsen and World Cup champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

FTX Crypto Cup 2022 is taking place from August 15-28 in Miami. Currently, Liem is ranked sixth with three points. Meanwhile, Carlsen is leading with nine points.

Vietnamese culture introduced at Army Games 2022

The Vietnamese team, along with the 16 other participating teams in the “Army of Culture” competition at Army Games 2022, set up a national pavilion at the House of Friendship at the Alabino training ground in Moscow, Russia, to introduce the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) as well as the culture, land and people of Vietnam.

The pavilion also displays photos on the traditional relationship and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia, especially in politics and national defence. The 2022 Army Games, held from August 13-27, gathers 270 teams from 37 countries worldwide. Its competitions are being held in Russia and several countries such as Uzbekistan, Armenia and Belarus.

Vietnam also hosts the Games’ competitions in the category of “Emergency Area”./.
