– General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong suggested several major directions for developing relations between Vietnam and Indonesia in the future during a phone conversation with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on August 25.

Trong updated Widodo on Vietnam’s development and foreign policies, saying the CPV and State of Vietnam attach importance to their strategic partnership with Indonesia and the long-standing relations between the two peoples. Read full story

– President Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted a reception for Choi Young-joo, former President of the Republic of Korea (RoK)-Vietnam Friendship Association and Chairman of the RoK-based Panko Group on August 25.

President Phuc highly valued Panko Group for expanding its investment in Vietnam and thanked Choi for his important support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Choi campaigned Korean enterprises in Vietnam to donate 1 million USD to help Ho Chi Minh City fight the pandemic when the city was battling the worst-ever COVID-19 resurgence last year.Read full story

– Vietnam rejects the so-called “nine-dash line” and maritime claims that run counter to international laws, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang reiterated on August 25.

– A report recently released by Australia’s Perth USAsia Centre has pointed out some factors making Vietnam an increasingly desirable partner to Australia and other countries.

The report, entitled “Engaging a proactive Vietnam: A pragmatic economic agenda for Australia”, wrote that firstly, Vietnam’s economic size and sophisticated response to COVID-19 makes it one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic nations. – Vietnamese forces carrying out peacekeeping duties have won support from the Party, State and people, as well as high evaluation from the United Nations and the international community, a military official has said.

Addressing a Ministry of National Defence conference on August 25 to review Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations, Maj. Gen. Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, reported that from June 2014 to August 2022, the army has deployed 512 officers and soldiers to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Abyei Area, along with the UN headquarters.Read full story

An Giang, Cambodian province seek closer ties in agriculture

Governor of the Cambodian province of Champasak Vilayvong Bouddakham is on a visit to An Giang where he seeks to beef up partnership with the Mekong Delta province in multiple fields, particularly agriculture.

The Cambodian governor visited Thoai Son district-based Dinh Thanh Agricultural Research Centre under Loc Troi Group JSC, the province’s leading rice producer and exporter, on August 26. He took a tour of a zone for production of rice varieties inside the centre to study advanced rice cultivation and hybrid rice breeding.

Welcoming Vilayvong Bouddakham, Chairman of Loc Troi Group Huynh Van Thon said his company wishes to cooperate with Champasak to carry out several hi-tech agricultural projects in which Loc Troi will support and transfer to Champasak know-hows on crop cultivation and its ownership rights of crop varieties.

Impressed by the group’s success in the use of advanced technology in agriculture, the Lao official showed particular interest in its premium-quality rice farming process. He expressed his hope that Loc Troi can help Champasak cultivate three rice crops of the year, applying its technology and standardized process.

He also invited Loc Troi to explore investment opportunities in agricultural development and mechanisation in Champasak and assist the province in selecting fruit varieties suitable to local climate and create hybrid varieties of tea and coffee in order to improve productivity and quality.

Loc Troi Group was among 27 enterprises recognised as prestigious rice exporters by the Ministry of Industry and Trade last year.

The group’s rice products have been exported to more than 20 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

It has a rice cultivation area of over 1 million hectares, owns the copyright of the main rice variety for export OM5451, and has a research institute with seven affiliated research centres. It was the first enterprise in the world to achieve a perfect 100 in the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) standard.

A day earlier, the Champasak Governor had a working session with Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Le Hong Quang. The leaders discussed in details their respective needs and capabilities for cooperation towards the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the 2022 – 2026 period in the hope of lifting the ties to a new height./.

Vietnam shares experience in balancing health, economic targets at APEC meeting

Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen shared Vietnam’s experience in realising the twin target of curbing the COVID-19 pandemic and sustaining economic growth, at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting held in Bangkok on August 25 – 26.

The 12th APEC High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy (HLM12) took place amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which broke out in early 2020 and has yet to be over and has caused substantial impacts on people’s health and economies in the region and the world.

It focused on three main issues – “Open to Partnership”, “Connect with the World”, and “Balance Health and the Economy”.

At a roundtable discussion about global health security, Deputy Minister Tuyen highlighted Vietnam’s experience in COVID-19 prevention and control.

He stressed that Vietnam has obtained many significant achievements in various fields, including sustaining economic growth.

Thanks to the application of drastic and effective solutions, the COVID-19 pandemic has been placed under control nationwide, the macro-economy kept stable, major balanced ensured, and people’s life increasingly improved, while production and businesses activities have returned to pre-pandemic levels, he said. The official said as soon as the pandemic was recorded in Vietnam, the Health Ministry swiftly coordinated with other ministries, sectors, and localities to contain the coronavirus transmission.

The country stepped up its vaccine diplomacy, established the COVID-19 Vaccine Fund, boosted vaccine import and development as well as the transfer of vaccine production technology, and launched the biggest-ever vaccination campaign. Its National Assembly and Government also issued resolutions to guarantee health and social security, which demanded urgent solutions to COVID-19 and investment in socio-economic recovery and development.

Vietnam has also proactively assisted other countries facing difficulties in pandemic response and economic recovery, according to Tuyen.

At the discussion, participants also shared their economies’ integrated policies on COVID-19 response. They also scrutinised the draft HLM12 Chair statement, which will be reported to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting this November./.
