CATL, VinFast reach strategic cooperation to promote global e-mobility

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) and Vietnamese automaker VinFast on October 31 signed a Memorandum of Understanding on global strategic cooperation to expand collaboration in developing electric vehicles.

The MOU signing ceremony was witnessed by Robin Zeng, Founder and Chairman of CATL, and Pham Nhat Vuong, Chairman of Vingroup and VinFast

Under the agreement, CATL and VinFast will explore various forms of cooperation on CIIC skateboard chassis on top of the current cooperation on battery supply with CTP (cell-to-pack) technology between the two companies, which will provide VinFast rapid access to the global market.

CATL and VinFast will cooperate to jointly develop new technology, in which the battery and many important components are integrated into the vehicle’s chassis, helping to reduce weight, increase the vehicle’s travel distance and reduce cost. It is expected that VinFast will be the pioneer car manufacturer to bring this technology to the global market with a strategic cooperation with CATL.

According to Le Thi Thu Thuy, Vingroup Vice Chairwoman and VinFast Global CEO, becoming a strategic partner of CATL is a very important event.

“Collaboration with CATL – a global leader of new energy innovative technologies – is the next development milestone of VinFast in applying advanced technology to enhance driving range and experience while offering competitive pricing for future models,” she said.

The cooperation will enable both companies to promote innovation of battery technologies and global e-mobility, contributing to global drive for energy transition and carbon neutrality goals, Thuy said./.

Thailand drops in global competitiveness rankings

Though Thailand has dropped five points to 33 in this year’s International Institute for Management Development competitiveness list, the country is still improving in many respects, Spokesman Anucha Buraphachaisri said on October 30.

According to Anucha, Thailand’s ranking in economic performance has fell from 21 to 34 as the COVID-19 pandemic had a short-term impact on the import-export sector.

However, the exports will start rising once the situation returns to normal.

He explained that Thailand’s consumer spending was still on a positive trajectory despite rising fuel prices, thanks to the government’s co-spending schemes like “Khon La Khrueng”.

The Thai government’s ranking for efficiency has also dropped from 20 to 31 because the authorities had to take huge loans.

The country’s productivity is rising thanks to the government’s many projects, like Sustainable Manufacturing Centre, launched to enhance production.

Moves are also being made to boost entrepreneurs’ potential through tools like the Digital Economy Promotion Agency’s digital start-up fund./.

VNA’s documentary wins numerous int’l awards

“Di qua trung bong chet” (Walking through the valley of death), a documentary written, produced and directed by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), has won six awards at international film festivals.

The awards include the Critics’ Choice Award at the World Film Carnival – Singapore; and the Knight of the Reel Awards, the Luis Bunuel Memorial Awards, the Gangtok International Film Festival, the Virgin Spring Cinefest, and the Calcutta International Cult Film Festival, all in India.

The documentary chronicles the lives of a number heroin addicts caught in an ever decreasing spiral of drugs, crime and desperation.

But thanks to an unlikely source, the addicts managed to kick the habit, and slowly rebuild their lives much to the delight of their families who have endured a life of disappointment and anguish.

The 60-minute documentary has been recognised by judges of film festivals in India and Singapore where it has been screened and won top prizes.

Jointly directed by Ngo Kim Anh, Nguyen Huu Trung and Paul Kennedy and filmed by young cameraman Ha Van Quynh, Walking through the valley of death follows the lives of a number of addicts living in Hanoi and Quang Ninh. For years many of them stooped to new lows in order to feed their addictions.

In this honest and revealing production, they open their hearts to discuss how they brought shame to their families, stealing money set aside to raise their own children to spend on drugs.

With many HIV positive, they struggled to see light at the end of the tunnel, trying and failing over and over again to quit drugs through rehabilitation centres.

Eventually they found salvation through an unlikely source, the power of prayer.

Director Paul Kennedy said: “While it is obviously a great privilege to have our work praised by peers in the film industry, what brings us the most joy is being able to highlight the plight and pain of the addicts featured to an international audience.

“Addiction to hardcore drugs is a huge problem all over the world. And this was our opportunity to shine a positive light on the problem and look at the amazing work carried out to drag people out of their pain and suffering.

“And it’s not just the addicts themselves. It’s also their families and loved-ones who suffer.”

Director Trung said: “The documentary does not focus on drug addiction but emphasises the burning desire to be saved of those who fell into the vicious circle of drugs and crime. Drugs made their desire hopeless and helpless. But a miracle came, saving them and now it’s their turn to save others who had a similar past and share that same burning desire.”

“What’s key in their rehabilitation is the approach taken by the New Life Christian Centre,” Assistant Director Nguyen Xuan Hung said.

“Instead of being under lock and key, they were left to their own devices to work on their addiction, channeling support from other addicts in the same situation or former drug users who had managed to get themselves clean.

“It’s their honestly and transparency that has helped to make Walking through the valley of death a success. They and their family members, wives, mothers, and fathers, that are the real stars of our documentary.”

One of the challenges faced by the documentary crew was bringing to life the moments of despair and heartache shared by the addicts.

Director Kennedy said: “Obviously we were unable to recreate some of the more harrowing accounts discussed by the addicts.

“Like the mother talking about how she wished she was a worm so she could crawl into the ground and die, or the addict recounting how he stole money set aside for milk for his new born baby to spend on drugs.

“The movie was really interesting and exciting and it has been a true motivation for other filmmakers across the globe,” wrote the Gangtok International Film Festival organisers.

Meanwhile, a quote from the World Film Carnival – Singapore says “You have snatched away the Winner position from the crowd of hundreds of promising filmmakers across the globe.

“You carved the rocks to make a sculpture that resembles your achievement. Your hard work really pays off.”

The documentary is currently being considered for more screenings and awards at 10 film festivals./.

HCM City’s State budget collection meets target ahead of schedule

Ho Chi Minh City’s State budget collection has reached its target ahead of schedule, surpassing 392.7 trillion VND (17 billion USD) in the first ten months of this year, up 1.6% from the estimate and 22.3% year-on-year, reported the municipal Statistics Office.

The city had been assigned to collect over 386.5 trillion VND in State budget revenue, up 5.9% from the 2021 estimate, including more than 270 trillion VND in domestic revenue, including crude oil, and 116.5 trillion VND in import-export revenue.

During the ten months, domestic revenue collection was estimated at over 254 trillion VND, or 97.9% of the estimate, marking an annual rise of 19.3%.

Of the figure, over 27 trillion VND was from State-owned enterprises, or 3% higher than the estimate, while more than 68.9 trillion VND was from the non-State sector and 60 trillion VND from foreign-invested sector, up 10.3% and 10.6% from the estimates, respectively.

As of late October, revenue from crude oil more than doubled year-on-year to over 23.9 trillion VND, up 128.2% from the estimate thanks to a surge in prices.

Budget collection from import-export activities rose 19.3% annually to over 114.7 trillion VND, or 98.5% of the estimate.

However, budget collection from localities was slow, reaching only 56.3% of the estimate to over 94.9 trillion VND, marking an annual increase of 21.7%.

Meanwhile, total local spending was about 51.8% of the estimate, at 51.66 trillion VND, down 20.9% year-on-year. Slow disbursement of public investment was one of the main causes./.

PM welcomes Adidas’s expansion plan in Vietnam

The Vietnamese Government and Prime Minister himself will create favourable conditions for Adidas to expand its operations in Vietnam in the spirit of harmonising interests and sharing risks, PM Pham Minh Chinh told CEO of Adidas Kasper Rorsted during a reception in Hanoi on October 31 following their phone talks in September 2021 and March 2022.

PM Chinh thanked the German Government, people and Adidas for their invaluable support to Vietnam during the difficult period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He expressed his delight at the development of friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Germany, especially in economy.

Germany is now Vietnam’s biggest European market, the seventh biggest importer in the world and an important gateway for Vietnamese goods. Vietnam is the biggest trade partner of Germany in Southeast Asia, with Adidas contributing a significant amount, he said.

The PM congratulated Adidas on its positive business results this year, with Vietnam continuing to be its strategic business area and supplier.

According to the government leader, Vietnam is building an independent, self-reliant economy in combination with proactive international integration in a practical and effective manner.

Rorsted, for his part, said Adidas will continue expanding its operations and create more jobs to turn Vietnam into its main production hub. He suggested the Vietnamese Government offer more support to Adidas to join in human resource development.

Agreeing with the Adidas expansion plan, the PM proposed the group make it easier for Vietnamese firms to join high-value stages of Adidas’s global supply chain.

The PM urged the sportswear giant to prompt the parliaments of the EU member nations to approve the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement as soon as possible, underlining the deal will create an important driving force for economic and investment ties between Vietnam and the EU, as well as Adidas’s operations in Vietnam.

He also suggested Adidas support Vietnam in different ways while recommending policies for the Vietnamese Government in the development of digital economy, green growth and delivery of climate change commitments.

Rorsted vowed to implement and urge stakeholders to follow PM Chinh’s proposals./.
