Dolphins spotted off Da Nang coast

Many residents expressed their excitement at witnessing a pod of dolphins leaping and playing in the waters near the Son Tra Peninsula in the central city of Da Nang.

Vo Nguyen Thai Duy shared a video of the dolphins swimming near the Son Tra Peninsula on social media on June 22. The clip was widely shared and commented on by many people.

Several people said they believe that the presence of dolphins indicated positive signs for the marine environment surrounding the Son Tra Peninsula.

Duy said that he had seen dolphins twice before; however, there were more dolphins and they were closer to the shore this time.

It is considered a good omen when people at sea spot dolphins.

Nguyen Duc Vu, head of the Son Tra Peninsula Management Board and Da Nang’s tourist beaches said: "This is the first time someone has filmed dolphins swimming near the shore of the Son Tra Peninsula, between Mui Sung and Mui Nghe.

“Previously, the Rescue Team of the Management Board had encountered several injured dolphins washed ashore, and they were promptly rescued and guided back to the open sea with the cooperation of relevant agencies."/.

Drought affects Thailand’s cassava output

Thailand's exports of cassava and cassava products are estimated at 9 million tonnes this year, down from 11 million tonnes last year due to reduced output caused by drought, according to the Foreign Trade Department under the Ministry of Commerce.

Ronnarong Phoolpipat, director-general of the department, said there is high demand for tapioca and tapioca products from Thailand when customers are willing to buy all available quantities, but this year Thai production has been affected by drought conditions, denting output.

He advised farmers not to rush harvesting small cassava roots that are unsuitable for sale during periods of high prices, as it may affect the overall quality.

In the first five months of this year, Thailand exported 4.73 million tonnes of cassava and cassava products valued at 7 billion USD, marking year-on-year decreases of 21% and 19%, respectively.

China remains Thailand's top export market for cassava products, accounting for 65% of the total.

Thailand is expected to import about 2.4 million tonnes of cassava chips from neighbouring countries, such as Laos and Cambodia, to meet the demand./.

Highest pension in Vietnam pays 5,200 USD per month

The person with the highest pension in Vietnam receives more than 124 million VND (5,200 USD) per month, according to the Vietnam Social Security (VSS).

As of April this year, a total of 471 people receive a monthly pension of more than 20 million VND (850 USD), said VSS. All of them worked in private companies or foreign enterprises in Vietnam and had paid social insurance at a high level.

The man with the highest pension in the country, referred to as T. throughout this article, lives in HCM City.

Before retiring, T. was chairman of the members' council and general director of a company operating in Vietnam.

T. retired in April 2015 with a pension of more than 87.3 million VND (3,700 USD) per month.

After five adjustments of the State pension, by June this year, T.'s pension is more than 124 million VND per month.

T. paid social insurance premiums for 23 years during the period before 2007 when a person's salary was taken as the basis for social insurance payment, T.’s social insurance premium was very high.

There were times when T.’s average social insurance fee was more than 200 million VND (8,500 USD) per month.

When the Law on Social Insurance 2006 came into effect, the maximum monthly fee for compulsory social insurance was equal to 20 months of the general minimum salary. Accordingly, from January 2007 to March 2015, T. always paid social insurance premiums at the highest rate as prescribed, with an average salary of 15.4-23 million VND (650-980 USD) per month.

Statistics last year showed that the average social insurance was 5.73 million VND (240 USD) per month, equal to 76% of workers’ average income.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises have the highest social insurance payment.

However, some enterprises separate or transfer allowances to other benefits so that they do not have to pay social insurance.

Therefore, the social insurance is only slightly higher than the minimum wage. This payment makes the pension very low.

To improve the situation, the amended social insurance law has two options for lump-sum payments.

The first option allows the employee to receive full pay-out for the entire period of participating in social insurance and then would not be entitled to a monthly pension.

As per the second option, the employee would receive a lump-sum payment for at most half of the period of contributions to the retirement and survivorship allowance fund. The remaining period would be reserved for calculating social insurance benefits when the employee reaches retirement age./.

Industry ministry, Samsung jointly train molding technicians

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and Samsung Vietnam kicked off the sixth batch of the training programme for molding technicians of Vietnam on June 26.

The programme aims to realise their cooperation agreement on training Vietnamese molding technicians for the 2020-2023 period, which was signed during the ninth meeting of the Vietnam-Republic of Korea (RoK) Joint Committee on Energy, Industry and Trade Cooperation in 2019.

As many as 30 trainees from mechanical engineering and mold companies will undergo a 14-week training course, including 10 weeks in Vietnam and four weeks in the RoK.

The objective of the programme is to train 200 mold technicians and improve their skills in mold design, fabrication and production with a focus on high-precision engineering.

According to the MoIT, the value of the mold and precision engineering industry in Vietnam is now estimated at over 1 billion USD each year. Particularly, with an annual growth rate of 18%, this industry is attracting the attention of many domestic and foreign businesses.

Notably, Vietnamese enterprises make only 8.5% of plastic injection molds, while the rest are metal stamping molds. Therefore, there is a high demand for molds in various industries such as plastics, mechanical engineering, machinery parts and components. This presents a significant opportunity for domestic firms to enhance their capacity to join the global supply chain./.

Vietnam secure first-ever title in Women’s AVC Challenge Cup

Vietnam claimed the championship title at the 2023 Women's AVC Challenge Cup after a dramatic match, beating hosts Indonesia on home turf on June 25.

It was the team's first-ever continental title, qualifying them for the FIVB Challenger Cup which serves as the promotion platform for the 2024 Volleyball Nations League.

The finale featured all Southeast Asian teams, both gunning for the golden ticket to the world event. It was the second meeting of the two sides in two months.

The previous match against Indonesia was the semi-finals of the 32nd SEA Games which saw Vietnam win 3-2 in a thrilling tie-break triumph.

In the rematch, Vietnam turned on high speed, running their offence swiftly and providing a tough challenge for the home team.

Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy showed off her elite skill. Her storm volleys gave Indonesian defenders no way to resist. Vietnam easily won the first set at 25-18.

Indonesia found a way to slow the pace of the match. They mounted pressure with their serves, which succeeded in breaking their opponents’ rhythm and momentum. They tried to set their counter-attack slowly yet accurately. They improved in defence, giving the away team a run for their money.

Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi was the playmaker of the team, securing many points from her powerful spikes.

She helped the hosts to take the next two sets 25-27 and 21-25.

In the fourth set, Vietnam made a comeback, firming up their backcourt in passing. They dealt with tough serves and attacks, while quickly recovering and countering to balance the game with a 25-20 win.

In the decisive set, teams were asked to focus through their exhaustion. They struggled for each point until they secured a 14-13 for Vietnam. Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet signalled a key player change, Vi Thi Nhu Quynh, who brought a fresh lease to the offence and brought back momentum.

Vietnam's captain Thuy, who scored 23 points, many of which were converted from clutch plays, was named Most Valuable Player of the Cup. She also shared the title of best outside spiker with Wu Fang-yu of Chinese Taipei.

Earlier, Chinese Taipei finished in third place after a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 match against India.

“Today is a good day for the team. We always support one another. I am very thankful to my teammates, our staff, and our coaches. They are all the reason for this victory,” Thuy said.

Her teammate Doan Thi Lam Oanh was the best setter while Dinh Thi Tra Giang was one of the two best middle blockers.

"We are pleased with the result of the team. Players did not reach their best performance but the result was great regardless," said coach Kiet.

"Now the whole team really wants to return home as soon as possible for the visa application to France."

The team will train in the Republic of Korea before competing in the July 27-30 tournament.

At the FIVB Challenger Cup, eight qualified teams play in a knockout stage format. The champion team will qualify for the next year's Volleyball Nations League as a challenger team./.
