Deputy PM Urges Comprehensive Roadmap for Electric Vehicle Transition

HANOI: Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has called for a strategic and detailed plan to transition from petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) as part of efforts to tackle severe air pollution in Vietnam. The Deputy PM highlighted the State’s responsibility to implement timely and specific measures to address pollution, particularly in major urban centers, during a meeting with representatives from various ministries and sectors.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Ha stressed the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to reduce pollution sources, with a significant emphasis on vehicle emissions. The meeting focused on reviewing a report that proposed policies aimed at encouraging the manufacturing and use of EVs in Vietnam. Ha underscored the importance of these initiatives as a critical step in improving air quality and ensuring public health.

The report discussed at the meeting outlined several policy proposals designed to facilitate the shift to EVs. These proposals include incentives for EV manufacturers, subsidies for consumers, and the development of necessary infrastructure, such as charging stations, to support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The Deputy PM urged for these measures to be implemented swiftly to meet the growing challenges posed by pollution in densely populated areas.

Ha’s remarks come amid increasing concerns about the environmental impact of traditional fuel vehicles and the need for sustainable transport solutions. The transition to electric vehicles is seen as a crucial component of Vietnam’s broader efforts to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable urban development.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on the need for coordinated action across government sectors to achieve the proposed goals. The Deputy PM emphasized that the roadmap for EV transition should be both specific and adaptable, allowing for adjustments as necessary to align with technological advancements and changing environmental conditions.
