Hanoi: The central province of Gia Lai is intensifying efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, with border guard forces stepping up awareness campaigns, inspections, and patrols while strictly enforcing regulations to prevent violations and improve fishermen's compliance. Since the beginning of 2025, Gia Lai's coastal border guard units have coordinated with relevant agencies to maintain 546 safe fishing teams comprising 2,267 vessels and 9,602 fishermen. These teams support each other at sea while helping detect and report violations of fisheries regulations.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the province's approach includes not only increasing the frequency of patrols and inspections but also focusing on raising awareness among the fishing community about the importance of adhering to fisheries regulations. By forming safe fishing teams, the authorities aim to create a collaborative environment among fishermen where they can support one another and ensure that all activities are conducted legally and sustainably. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance compliance and promote sustainable fishing practices in the region.
