GM Korea’s Aug. sales plunge 50.7 pct amid partial strike

GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of General Motors Co., said Monday its August sales plummeted over 50 percent from a year earlier due to production delays caused by a partial strike over wages.

GM Korea sold 15,634 vehicles last month, down 50.7 percent from 31,716 units a year ago, the company said in a statement.

Domestic sales fell 51 percent to 1,614 units, while overseas sales also sank 50.7 percent to 14,020 units, the company said.

GM Korea’s union has been carrying out a partial strike over the past two months. Production losses due to the strike reportedly amount to nearly 40,000 vehicles.

A company official said GM Korea plans to swiftly conclude the wage negotiations and recover as much of the production loss incurred as possible.
