HCM City to Relocate 40,000 Canal-Side Households by 2030

Ho chi minh city: As part of its broader urban redevelopment strategy, Ho Chi Minh City is working to relocate nearly 40,000 households living on and along canals by 2030, with almost 3,000 already resettled as of mid-July 2025.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the Office of the Municipal People’s Committee reported that a total of 2,984 out of 6,500 targeted households have been compensated and relocated under the city’s urban renovation programme for the 2020-25 period and beyond. The relocation initiative is a significant part of the city’s efforts to enhance living conditions and mitigate environmental impacts associated with canal-side habitation. It aims to address issues related to sanitation, flooding, and infrastructure development.

The city administration has outlined plans to continue these efforts through to 2030, focusing on improving urban living standards and ensuring better management of natural resources. The relocation and compensation process is expected to facilitate the implementatio
n of sustainable urban development solutions, creating a healthier environment for residents.
