Hanoi: Thong Nhat Hospital, a prominent public healthcare institution under the health ministry's oversight, has announced the successful completion of its inaugural living-donor liver transplantation. The breakthrough surgery was executed with the assistance of Military Central Hospital 108, located in Hanoi.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the recipient of the transplant was a 50-year-old man suffering from liver cancer and cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B and C, compounded by type-2 diabetes. His condition had been critical prior to the procedure. The donor, his 29-year-old younger brother, willingly provided a segment of his liver to aid his sibling's recovery.

The complex surgery, which took place on August 22, lasted eight hours and involved a collaboration between experts from both Thong Nhat Hospital and Military Central Hospital 108. Post-surgery reports indicate that the patient is in stable condition, with the transplanted liver functioning effectively.
