Hue Launches Southeast Asia’s First Deposit and Return Recycling System

Hanoi: The central city of Hue launched a pilot ‘Deposit and Return System’ (DRS), the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, under the project ‘Hue – A Plastic Smart City in Central Vietnam’ (TVA project). The initiative is funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Norway through the WWF-Vietnam. This model is seen as an effective tool for the extended responsibility of producers. It requires consumers to pay a small deposit when purchasing bottled or canned beverages, which they can reclaim upon returning empty containers to designated collection points.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the system will begin operation on September 20. Collection machines will be placed at various locations, including the University of Sciences, Hue University, and Nera Garden condominium. This innovative approach aims to encourage recycling and reduce plastic waste, promoting a more sustainable environment in the region.
