Meteorological Department keeps an eye on Typhoon “Yagi”, expects more rain to hit Thailand

The Meteorological Department is monitoring the strong tropical storm “Yagi” in the upper South China Sea. It is expected to make landfall in Vietnam around 7-8 September and then weaken in Laos. Although it will not hit Thailand directly, it will result in increased rain in Thailand. Therefore, we must watch out for continuous rain from 8-13 September, especially in the northern region.

Mr. Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Meteorological Department’s Weather Forecast Division, said that the severe tropical storm “Yagi” in the upper South China Sea is moving west, slightly north. It is expected that this storm will intensify further while at sea. It will then move through Lai Lam Island, the Gulf of Tonkin, and make landfall in northern Vietnam during 7-8 September 2024 and weaken in the Lao PDR.

This storm will not move directly into Thailand, but will pull the southwest monsoon that covers Thailand to continue to be strong. In addition, the weakening edge of the storm in the upper part of Laos may cause m
ore rain in the northern and upper northeastern regions during 8 – 13 September 2024.

The direction of the storm must be continuously monitored because there is a cold air mass from Tibet spreading down. The direction of the storm is changing all the time.

The increasing rainfall at this time is due to the southwest monsoon blowing in and gaining strength. The monsoon trough is covering the lower northern, central and northeastern regions. There is also a low-pressure cell covering the central region. Under the monsoon trough, the distribution of rainfall will increase in areas near the monsoon trough and on the monsoon side. Heavy to very heavy rainfall can occur in many areas in the lower northern, central and lower northeastern regions, central regions including Bangkok and its vicinity, eastern and southern regions, especially the southern Andaman coast, which may cause flash floods, forest runoff and strong winds. Sailors and fishermen should sail with caution. Small boats should not leave the shore. T
he public is asked to follow the warning announcements from the Meteorological Department and keep a close watch.
