Hanoi: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has directed ministries, sectors, and localities to pursue the dual goal of combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing while fostering sustainable fisheries, thus safeguarding national reputation and interests and protecting the livelihoods of coastal communities. The request was delivered at the 25th meeting of the National Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing, which was connected online with 21 coastal provinces and cities.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of addressing IUU fishing as a critical issue impacting the country’s international standing and the well-being of its coastal populations. The government is seeking to balance enforcement measures against illegal fishing activities with initiatives that promote the long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector.
The meeting underscored the need for coordinated efforts across various levels of government to implement effective monitoring syst
ems and compliance mechanisms. Stakeholders were encouraged to collaborate in developing strategies that not only prevent illegal fishing practices but also support the economic vitality of fishing communities.
