Seaport Growth Accelerates on Stronger Infrastructure Connectivity

Hanoi: The Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster has recorded strong growth in the opening weeks of 2026, buoyed by expanding international shipping routes and improved infrastructure connectivity. The Vietnam Seaports Association (VPA) reported that container throughput on mainline routes at the port cluster reached 711,429 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in January 2026, up 9% year-on-year. Growth was concentrated at several key terminals, including Gemalink International Port with 198,905 TEUs, up 24%; Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) with 114,635 TEUs, up 26%; and SP-SSA International Terminal (SSIT) with 98,617 TEUs, an increase of 15%.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the surge in growth is attributed to enhanced infrastructure and the expansion of international shipping routes, which have collectively facilitated increased container throughput at the port cluster. This upward trend underscores the strategic importance of the Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster in Vietnam’s maritime logistics landscape. The data highlighted notable performance at Gemalink International Port, Cai Mep International Terminal, and SP-SSA International Terminal, which have all contributed significantly to the overall increase in container traffic.

The VPA’s report indicates that the ongoing development projects aimed at improving infrastructure connectivity have played a crucial role in attracting more shipping lines and boosting port activity. Enhanced connectivity and the port’s strategic location have positioned it as a key hub for international trade, enabling it to handle higher volumes of cargo efficiently. The focus on infrastructure improvement is expected to continue driving growth in the upcoming months as the port cluster adapts to the evolving demands of global trade.
