Soc Trang: As part of a nationwide campaign to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the Border Guard Command of the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang has launched a high-intensity operation, including activities to ramp up public awareness, patrols, and inspections aimed at eradicating IUU fishing practices in coastal areas. Currently, 100% of Soc Trang’s offshore fishing fleet has been equipped with VMS and is fully compliant with IUU fishing regulations. For several consecutive years, no vessel from the province has been found violating offshore fishing regulations.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the concerted efforts by the Soc Trang border guards are part of a broader initiative to address issues related to IUU fishing across the nation. The measures in place include increased patrols and rigorous inspections to ensure adherence to fishing regulations. The use of Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) has played a crucial role in maintaining compliance and preventing illegal activities at sea.
The commitment to combating IUU fishing is evident as the province has reported no violations from its fishing fleet in recent years. The proactive measures undertaken by the Soc Trang authorities underscore the importance of sustained efforts in protecting marine resources and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
