Vietnam Calls for Stronger Effectiveness of UN Human Rights Council

Hanoi: Vietnam has called for greater effectiveness of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in protecting and promoting human rights amid growing global challenges, including conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate change, and emerging technologies. Addressing the general debate on the global human rights situation at the opening of the UNHRC's 63rd regular session in Geneva on September 7, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, and other international organisations in Geneva, affirmed Vietnam's support for the efforts of the UN, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and relevant bodies.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung highlighted the importance of enhancing the efficiency of the UNHRC's mechanisms. He emphasized the need for the Council to adapt to the rapidly changing global landscape and address emerging challenges effectively. The ambassador urged for collective action and stronger collaboration among member states to ensure that the Council can fulfill its mandate in safeguarding human rights worldwide.

The call for a more effective UNHRC comes at a time when the world faces numerous challenges that pose threats to human rights. With the impact of climate change, ongoing conflicts, and the rise of new technologies, the need for a robust and responsive human rights framework is more critical than ever. Vietnam's appeal underscores the necessity for the international community to work together in strengthening the UNHRC's role in addressing these issues.
