Hanoi: The Vietnam National Mine Action Centre (VNMAC) hosted a conference in Hanoi on October 21 to rally global aid and support to sweep the country clean of deadly mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the war. The event served as a key platform to raise awareness and responsibility among government agencies while enhancing international cooperation and donor engagement, particularly from 13 countries that maintain comprehensive strategic partnerships with Vietnam.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the conference emphasized the critical need for international assistance and collaboration to address the ongoing threat posed by mines and UXO. VNMAC highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships to mobilize resources for clearance operations, which are vital for ensuring the safety and economic development of affected regions.
The conference brought together representatives from various sectors, including government officials, international organizations, and donor countries. Discussions focused on strategies to effectively tackle the challenges of mine clearance and the necessity of sustained commitment from the international community.
VNMAC’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to mitigate the long-term impacts of explosive remnants of war, which continue to hinder the lives of many Vietnamese citizens. The continued presence of mines and UXO poses significant risks, impeding agricultural activities and infrastructure development, and causing casualties among civilians.
By seeking increased international support, Vietnam aims to accelerate its mine clearance efforts, ultimately contributing to regional stability and prosperity. The conference underscored the collective responsibility to address the legacy of war and facilitate a safer future for all citizens.
