Hanoi: Vietnam plans to export approximately 7 million tonnes of rice in 2026, down from 8 million tonnes last year, with a gradual reduction to just 4 million tonnes by 2030, according to Do Ha Nam, Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA). Explaining this, Nam said that 2026 presents numerous difficulties and challenges, and the global supply glut significantly impacts all exporters, including Vietnam.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the decision to reduce rice exports is part of a broader strategy by the Vietnamese government to adjust to shifting global market conditions. The focus will be on maintaining market stability while ensuring the country's domestic food security. The gradual reduction in export volumes is intended to help stabilize rice prices and ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
The Vietnam Food Association emphasizes that the export reduction is a proactive measure to align with global trends and demands. They are also considering diversifying into other agricultural products to reduce reliance on rice exports. This shift is seen as a strategic move to ensure long-term growth and sustainability in Vietnam's agricultural sector.
