Woman records video exposing taxi driver not turning on meter

Bangkok: A woman posted a clip exposing a taxi driver who did not use the meter and charged her 150 baht from Siam to Worachak. Netizens were furious and criticized her, wondering if the fine was too light.

A popular Facebook page, ‘Want to be famous, I’ll arrange it for you, Return part 7,’ posted a video clip recorded by a TikTok user, showing an incident while hailing a taxi under the BTS Siam station. In the clip, the poster recorded a conversation between her and the driver of a yellow taxi that had come to pick up a passenger.

The incident occurred when the poster stated her destination as ‘Worachak’ but received an answer from the taxi driver that the fare would be 150 baht without using the meter. When the poster asked why the meter was not used, the driver replied, ‘There is no meter. Sorry,’ causing her to thank him and leave.

After the clip was released on social media, many people commented. Most of them criticized the taxi driver’s actions that did not comply with the law. Some questioned why
the transport department was not stricter in inspecting and punishing, pointing out that the fine was too light, so taxi drivers still dared to break the rules without fear.

Some commentators questioned whether the transport department is only responsible for renewing vehicle registrations these days, or whether there are any measures to seriously address the problem. There were also calls for the law to be revised and penalties to be tightened to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future. –
