150-year-old durian with excellent flesh that won the championship

Tourists flock to buy local durians over 150 years old at the orchard in Trang Province after last year it won the award for best-quality cream-colored local durians in the competition, and also received the GAP mark, while the owner received the Outstanding Farmer Award in 2023.

At the 100-year-old Thong Phinyo Durian Garden, Village No. 6, Na Khao Sia Subdistrict, Na Yong District, Trang Province, Mr. Phinyo Tengrang, aged 67, took us to see a local durian garden that is over 150 years old, with 37 trees planted by his ancestors, who have passed it down as a legacy to his second generation.

At this time, local durians are falling, 20-30 fruits per day. Although the yield is less than in previous years due to the drought that has lasted for more than 2 months, the advantage is that the durian flesh is dry, not mushy, and is sweet and delicious, more than in previous years, and sells for a good price of 70 baht per kilogram, compared to 50-60 baht per kilogram in previous years. But the tree that tourists
ask about and come to buy at the orchard is Chao Wad, because it once won the prize for selecting the best local durian variety, cream colored, delicious in Na Yong District, Trang Province on June 9, 2023.

In addition, Mr. Phinyo also does mixed gardening by growing champada (similar to jackfruit), sweet rambutan, growing straw mushrooms, raising golden apple snails, and others on an area of ??4 rai. It is the garden that received the most awards in 2023, causing the garden owner to receive the Outstanding Farmer Award from the Trang Provincial Agricultural Office and also received the GAP mark in the same year. As a result, the durians at Phinyo Garden have been reserved since last year. Many customers have stopped by the garden to buy, so they have to queue in order. Every durian has the GAP mark, guaranteeing safety and accepting claims if damaged.

Mr. Phinyo said that on the 4 rai area, since the time of his grandparents, which he took over after retiring from his regular job, he is now over 60 years o
ld, 2 generations of people or about 150 years old, there are 37 trees. Last year was the first year that there was a contest at the Tambon Administrative Organization, Chong, Na Yong District, which he brought 4 trees in total: Chaowad, Klum, Kiew Yai, and Khi Raet, won 3 awards, including the first prize, honorable mention, considered to have won the most awards, and received the Outstanding Farmer award last year. Everyone asks for Chaowad, and for GAP, he asked for it last year, but just got it this year, which is the G mark, which is attached to the tree trunk to guarantee the quality for both regular and occasional customers.
